MugenCast: Inspiration For The Everyday Creative

A New Year! (Which I’m a little late to)

But, hope you all are having a good start to 2024. My gift to you all is a new episode, and this is a special one! I interviewed 3 people. Jaheim, Bakari, and Kai. All members of a 7-on-7 football team here in Philly.

…And you might be wondering why I chose to do this

As you’ll hear in this episode, this football team has been more than just a place to play a game. It’s a family, a brotherhood. Fostering community in a city that desperately needs it.

And this team, led by the youngest coach in the country, Coach Jaheim, is on the verge of making some serious strides this year. And it’s a story worth hearing.

Before the year was over I wanted to squeeze in one more episode, and I’m really happy with who I was able to get!

My guest today is someone whose work I only recently discovered a few years ago, but he’s been honing his craft for many many years before that.

My guest today is Christof Laputka, the creator of The Leviathan Chronicles. A story that has captivated thousands of listeners across the world, and inspired countless other creators to enter the world of audio drama.

But the journey Christof has taken to get to where he is today is a unique one. He sacrificed a stable, lucrative career to chase his dreams and make the world of leviathan a reality.

And in this episode we’ll explore what kept him going despite hard economic times, creative insecurities, and even tragic personal loss…

One of the best feelings (in my opinion) is to have a great conversation. An interaction with someone that’s enriching and meaningful. Sometimes you talk to people that just….inspire you.

The podcast today is me having that conversation. With one of my favorite contemporary artists.

Long time listeners of the show you will know that I actually interviewed this same guest three years ago in the midst of the pandemic. Quite a lot has changed in his life since then and I just felt like this was a great time to pick his brain on a few things that I knew he’d have a great perspective on.

The world of non-profits is an interesting one, a fact that I actually didn’t know until recently. The title of non-profit comes with a complicated legacy that intertwines with the checkered past of America. But the reassurance I have in the non-profit space comes from founders and organizers like my guest today, Ron Toles.

The founder of the Philadelphia-based non-profit Ordinarie Heroes.

OH is an organization focused on community building and engagement. With a focus in the neighborhoods of Philly, the organization has been going strong for 10 years. Consistently connecting with communities in a way that’s genuine and long-lasting.

This focus on community comes from Ron, and his experiences growing up in Northeast DC and seeing firsthand the importance of close knit bonds between community members.

Our conversation today dives into Ron and his beginnings, how he decided to create, and build OH, as well as how the past few decades have molded who he is now as a man, leader, and a father...

Creators come in all different shapes and sizes. Some are just getting their feet wet in their chosen field, others are deeply immersed - continuing decades of work in a single discipline.

My guest today is someone who’s a bit of an outlier, who has had a foot or hand in several different artistic areas over the years.

My guest this week is Spikima (otherwise known as Spikima Movies). Starting with an interest in cinema and old movies, and subsequently a passion for music, Spikima has chosen a unique path.

(And as you’ll hear taking the road less traveled is a theme throughout his life)

But now he’s carved out a niche in cinema analysis. Dissecting a wide range of films with his methodical investigation into the theme, purpose, and uniqueness of each creation

With this style he’s gained a loyal following and has continued to grow steadily throughout 2022. Our conversation today revolves around his creative life, what he’s learned along the way, and where he plans to go next...

Interviews are back! No more solo shows…At least not for a while.

This week we have on Matthew Crawford, or Tekking101 if you follow his YouTube channel. As a veteran of YouTube, Matt has seen A LOT! We talked about his humble beginnings as a creator, what it’s been like to be a full-time content creator, and overall what his “job” means to him.

It was a great conversation with a great person, hope you enjoy it!

Episode 66! And it’s a solo show! (Revolutionary I know)

I took a short hiatus, and before we dive back into more guest-driven episodes, I wanted to chat for a little bit. About what I’ve been up to since episode 65, how my summer went, and plans for the future.

Hope you enjoy this quick little update!

It's not every day you get to sit down with someone on the Forbes 30 under 30 list; but it just so happens that I was lucky enough to do so for this episode!

And not just any member, but a hometown hero from right here in Philadelphia! If you’re a creative individual in Philly my guest today should need no introduction...Will Toms of REC Philly.

Will and the team at REC Philly have been revolutionizing the world of creative entrepreneurship. Giving creators the tools and resources they need to be the most fulfilled version of themselves. What started as an idea in an abandoned warehouse, has blossomed into a full-fledged creative space supporting hundreds of members across the city.

And In this interview, Will details his personal and professional growth as a creative. And some of the core principles that have guided him this far.

It’s been a while since I had a guest I was this excited to interview...

And don’t get me wrong, I’m always excited to interview my guests! But this podcast is different because it’s been about 5 years in the making…Crazy!

My guest this episode is Kia Orion. Digital nomad, entrepreneur and most importantly musician! Kia has served as a motivation of mine for years now! (In terms of podcasting and overall just as a creator)

He’s seen his fair share of ups and downs in the creative life, and has been consistently a genuine person throughout it all.

In this episode we dive into Kia's creative journey. What drove him to take some of the drastic measures he did, what he learned along the way, and ultimately the precipice he’s found himself at now…

My guest today isn’t a creator in the normal way you might think. They don’t take photos or paint pictures (they did model for a little bit but that’s a different story for another time).

Rather they help others to create better lives for themselves. They use the art of psychology, holistic healing, and mindfulness to guide others to a better state of mind. My guess today is Karina Gutierrez the founder of MyStrategicSoul.

And aside from being my coach, counselor and one of my clients! Karina is an amazing energy to be around and talk to.

Her story has some highs and some lows, but she’s been shaped by those experiences and made better by them. Like we all are.
