David defeated Goliath only because he was on the side of God and empowered by the Spirit to do so.
Likewise, we must take the fight to the enemy and, as godly spiritual warriors, stand firm to defeat the Enemy. Now is the time for believers to be brave, fierce, and fiery in defending the faith, spreading the gospel, and demonstrating the love of God in a world of hate!

You probably won’t find any examples of vacation time in the Bible. However, the spirit of longer periods of rest is certainly there. Macro Sabbath, the practice of giving yourself permission to take seasons of longer rest such as vacations, gap years, short term career changes, or cutting back commitments for a month, gives us a deeper rest. This is the spirit of the Jubilee year, but on a more annual cycle. It also connects with the term “sabbatical,” an extended rest and renewal period every seven years. However, it is not just for pastors and professors! We all need seasons of extended rest and refocus to renew our sense of purpose and vision for our own spiritual journeys.

Sabbath practices of rest, silence, thanksgiving, prayer, and scripture reflection are not just for Sunday! Throughout each day we are encouraged by scripture to take frequent moments to renew our spirits and refresh ourselves for the tasks to come. Otherwise, we are like pressure pots with the lids seal tight… it is only a matter of time before the pressure becomes too much and we blow! However, in loving God daily, in small but frequent ways, we find our love-relationship with Him renewed, which leads to our own renewal as well. 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there, or even a short prayer and a deep breath can make such a difference!

The Bread that Jesus offers is rooted in resurrection and new life. In this series we have learned that this Bread will not leave us dry and empty as the bread of the world does. It was paid for in blood. Now, in the climactic revelation of Easter, we see that Jesus is stronger than sin and death and shame! In him we can have eternal life that begins here, now, today! John 3:16 is not just a bumper sticker or a sign in the stadium.

This sermon reminds us that Jesus did not come to Jerusalem to be celebrated and to enjoy himself. If so, he would have stayed on the donkey. Rather, Jesus clearly stated many times that he must go to Jerusalem to die. His body was broken there so that we may be made whole. He was rejected so that we may be accepted. He is the broken bread that heals our brokenness.

Many of us feel like we are in the valley, feeling very dry and broken. We have tried all the self-help advice, spiritualism, empty religions, and self-determination techniques, we have read hundreds of pages of advice on the internet and watched countless YouTube videos, and maybe we have even tried to fill our lives with “things” and “stuff” that were marketed as sure to bring us happiness (everything from the best technology to the most indulgent vices). Yet we are still in the valley of the dry bones asking, “Can these bones live?” The Spirit seeks to breathe life!
