It is not enough to simply take a passage at face value and read it in a surface way. Let’s go deeper! Let’s truly investigate the meaning. And, most importantly, let us remain open to the Spirit’s leadership as our true teacher and revealer of Truth.

Theme: Wake up and pay attention to Jesus

The disciples thought that they were simply enjoying a nice Passover meal with their teacher. But suddenly Jesus turns the meal upside down with an incredible sign. He rattles the solemn purpose of the ancient ritual with a shocking claim about his body and blood. We can imagine that the disciples were caught off guard and perplexed. Jesus often catches us off guard. This is because he did not come to give our lives ease and balance, but to make us uneasy and set us off balance enough to realize where we stand, to wake us up, to shock us back to life.

It seems like there is not much we can count on anymore in this world. People are fickle. They come and go in our lives. Some will often let us down. Governments that seemed eternal are toppled in a day. Programs meant to bring stability can even bring unrest and uncertainty. We long for something lasting, something permanent, something dependable.
What many of us do not realize is that what we long for exists! What we really hunger for is the timelessness of God’s Word. Amazingly, this timeless text becomes timely in every situation and moment of every day of our lives! It is dependable, never failing, and unchanging.

Theme: being content and satisfied -vs- always being discontent and longing for something else or the “next big thing”
Do you ever find yourself feeling stuck in an endless pursuit of the next big thing or the next all important step in your life? Perhaps you tell yourself, “Oh when I finally get there…” or, “When I finally reach that goal…”! Then, we believe we will finally be satisfied and fulfilled in life. We are so obsessed with where we are not that we cannot fully enjoy where we are! We are so obsessed with what we don’t have that we never enjoy what we do have! God reminds us to be thankful for what he has provided in every situation. If we are never satisfied “here,” we will never be satisfied “there.” Counting the ways he is blessing us NOW gives us a joyful new appreciation for what we have and who we are! In this Joy we are better able to live the life to the full that Jesus promised.

Theme: Be yourself, be genuine to who God made you to be, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Learning to be happy as God has made us and being true to ourselves is a struggle sometimes. We see how others live, dress, and behave and perhaps want to imitate them. The Enemy and the World capitalize on this impulse and try to persuade us to live in a way that is contrary to how God created us and longs for us to be. As we attempt to be more like the world, the more captive we become and the more miserable we are. We will never have true joy until we embrace our true identity in Christ. Only in Jesus do we find the real meaning of satisfaction.

Title: Timothy: No Branch Is Too Small To Burn

Theme: We are qualified and equipped by the Spirit
Do you ever feel too insignificant to make a Kingdom difference in this world? Everyone believes they are “too” something to do anything! Timothy, no doubt, often felt too inexperienced and too young when going to elders, leaders, and rabbis in the synagogues to preach the gospel. Perhaps he felt like he didn’t have the knowledge, training, or eloquence to stand before others who seemed to be far more qualified. Yet, Paul encouraged Timothy to not look down on himself because of his inadequacies. Perhaps we need the same encouragement today!
Pentecost Day reminds us that it is the Holy Spirit, symbolized by uncontainable fire, that empowers us and qualifies us. When we allow this holy fire to burn freely within us we will see that nothing is impossible because we are no longer depending on our own strength. We are instead allowing the strength of the Lord to work through us.
