  • From Olympic dreams to a career in comedy and community service with Sheilah D. Smiley, Ep. 129

Ep. 129: Sheilah D. Smiley is a person of many ethnicities and races and many talents. A Black woman with White, Black, Native American and Puerto Rican relatives and ancestors, she dreamed in high school and college of being an Olympic track star. And, she nearly got there -- making it to the Olympic trials in Atlanta in 1996.

Sheilah's life and career then pivoted, as she embarked upon a career in acting and comedy, where she captivates audiences with her passion, brutal honesty, and fresh delivery. Her comedy 'univer-soul' performances are a mixture of observations, radical confessions, parodies, characters and physical comedy that bring all her personal experiences to life.

Moreover, Sheilah never loses sight of the struggles we all face, and she has committed to giving back to the community as much as possible. Indeed, the beneficiary of the production of her show Diary of a Mad Black Comic is SmileTrain.Org, a cleft lip and palate children's charity.

  • Memoir of biracial and multiracial American experience, with Elliott Lewis, Ep. 127

Ep. 127: Elliott Lewis is an assistant professor of journalism at SUNY Purchase College in Westchester County, New York, where he teaches media law and broadcast news. He joined the faculty in 2015 after a 20-year career as a television reporter, anchor, producer and assignment editor.

Elliott is a 2013 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law in Ohio, where he also served as a part-time faculty member in the university's School of Communication. He is licensed to practice law in the state of New York.

Before becoming a law student, Elliott was a freelance television news reporter in Washington, DC. Over the years, his clients included WJLA-TV, BET News, CNN, Associated Press Television, and the Washington bureaus of Tribune Broadcasting and Hearst Television.

Prior to moving to the nation's capital, Elliott's career took him to a number of cities around the country. He has worked as a reporter for WKMG-TV in Orlando, WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, KPTV in Portland, KGTV in San Diego, and KTVN in Reno.

Elliott attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he studied Spanish and communications. When not in class, he could be found running the audio board at the campus radio station, working in the university's public relations office, and delivering farm news for the College of Agriculture's radio news service. He completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland-University College.

Early in his career, Elliott joined the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and later served on the NABJ Board of Directors from 2003-2007. In addition, he has been an ex-officio board member of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism think-tank located in St. Petersburg, Florida.

With Fade, television journalist Elliott Lewis weaves his memoirs as a black-and-white biracial American with the voices of dozens of multiracial people who are challenging how we think and speak about race today. His interviews illuminate a variety of coping strategies and reveal stark generational differences in the ways mixed race people have come to terms with their identity.

A comprehensive look at the multiracial state of the union, Fade tackles hot-button issues such as the often complicated lives of multiracial people in communities of color, interracial dating, transracial adoption, "black versus biracial" identities, and the birth of a national multiracial movement. Elliott also shares his own moving - and often humorous -firsthand experiences with race, along with intimate stories from those at the forefront of nationwide efforts to formally recognize the multiracial population.

  • Managing multiethnic and multiracial hair with Dr. Ena Hennegan, creator of Many Ethnicities hair care brand, Ep. 125

Ep. 125: Dr. Ena Hennegan is a mother, a board-certified, and a practicing family physician in suburban Chicago. She is also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Three Daughters of the Doctor® – a personal care brand created for multi-ethnic people.

Dr. Hennegan a multiracial (Black & White) woman has waged four battles with hair: First her own and then one with each of her three daughters – each of whom has a different hair type and/or texture. One winter night in 2013, during the vaunted, "Polar Vortex," she looked along the outer edge of the family's tub after bath time and counted more than 70 bottles of shampoo, conditioner and other hair products from the brands she had tried. Each bottle had been purchased in the hope of improving upon the performance of the last. Each bottle offered some promise. Not a single one of them was just right. It was at that moment she decided there had to be a different way to address this situation, because she knew she wasn't alone. Ultimately, that led to the creation of Many Ethnicities®. Many Ethnicities products are designed to be safe, healthy, easy to use, and yet deliver optimal performance. Always manufactured to the highest standards in small batches. It is through Many Ethnicities products that Dr. Hennegan combines her love for helping and caring for people with her passion for finding solutions to the unique personal care challenges faced by multi-ethnic people each day.
