Ep. 110: Leslie Barlow is a practicing artist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. Primarily an oil painter, Barlow's current work employs the figure and narrative elements to explore issues of multiculturalism, "otherness", representation, and identity. She investigates complex topics and social tensions through the use of the personal; often creating works depicting family, friends, and people in her community, and personal experiences, to reflect the subtle and not-so-subtle integrations of these ideas into individual lives and identities. Barlow received her BFA in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin- Stout and her MFA in 2016 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
Leslie Barlow has received great recognition from her home state of Minnesota. She appeared in the season 7 television segment of tpt's Minnesota Original, airing April 2016, was published in the "Best New Art 2016" list in Minnesota Monthly Magazine, and was published as "Artist of the Year" for 2016 in the City Pages. Recently she received a Third Place award in the Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition in 2015 for a large oil painting from her latest series. In 2014, another painting from the same series also received an Honorable Mention in the national juried exhibition at the Washington Pavilion Museum of Arts and Sciences in Sioux Falls, SD. Barlow actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and many of her pieces can be found in private and public collections. Her work can be seen at the new US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, where in 2016 she was commissioned by the Vikings team to create 6 portrait paintings of iconic Vikings players. Maintaining a vigorous studio practice, Barlow has also recently participated in artist residencies including the 3 x 5 Emerging Artist Residency at The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN) and she was the Artist-in-Residence at Whitworth University (Spokane, WA) for the month of October, 2016. Her studio is located in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
In addition to her studio practice, Barlow currently works as an Assistant Instructor at Juxtaposition Arts, as the Administrative Assistant for Northern Lights.mn, and is a board member of the Minneapolis Art Lending Library. Barlow has a keen interest in arts programming and organization management, and has over 400 hours of volunteer work with the Soap Factory, serving as the Public Relations Intern in 2011 and as Co-Director of the Volunteer Biennial exhibition in 2012. Barlow has also worked as the Gallery Manager for Waiting Room, helped manage the Art Department at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and during her undergraduate education Barlow helped start and manage an artist co-op gallery.
Leslie Barlow is a 2016 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant recipient.

In addition, he is the New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet—which was, in no particular order, an IndieBound NEXT List Selection, a Borders Original Voices Selection, a Barnes & Noble Book Club Selection, Pennie's Pick at Costco, a Target Bookmarked Club Pick, and a National Bestseller. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Jamie is the proud father of more teenagers than he can keep track of.

Ep. 108 - On June 12, 1967, in the case of Loving v. Virginia, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that state laws prohibiting mixed-race marriages were unconstitutional.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ruling, the Loving Project is documenting the experiences of couples whose marriages would have been illegal in some states prior to 1967. Our goal is to celebrate a landmark in civil rights but also to explore what it's like to be part of a mixed-race marriage at this time in America's history.
The Loving Project is produced by Farrah Parkes and Brad Linder, an interracial couple living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they share their home with three very spoiled cats. Brad is an award-winning journalist whose work has aired on NPR and WHYY. Farrah is a non-profit professional who dabbles in social justice activism. They have been married for over 10 years.

Ep. 105: Adam Gould is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of eduKenya (http://www.edukenya.org/), which seeks to empower children and their families with the opportunity to break the chronic cycle of poverty and transform their lives and communities.
Adam co-founded eduKenya with Bob Kikuyu in 2010 as an extension of the Kenya Children Project, an outreach to children and families in Mathare.
The Kenya Children Project was established in 2006 as a partnership with Believers Centre Mathare Church and Life in Abundance to expand on the church's childcare program by developing a fully functional primary school. The Kwa Watoto School – which means "for the children" in Swahili – was the result.
From 2007 – 2010, the Kwa Watoto School rapidly expanded, adding a new grade level each year. The Skills Training and Home Based Care programs were initiated to benefit students' parents and other community members by teaching income generating skills and providing support for people living with HIV/AIDS and other life threatening conditions.
eduKenya was founded to build upon the success of the Kenya Children Project by replicating the model in other areas of the slum for the benefit of countless other uneducated children and families living in abject poverty.
Listen as Adam tells Alex about his first journey to Kenya, how get got involved in the culture and society, and the journey to forming eduKenya, and how he remains tied to Kenya via his work but also through his own, multicultural, multiracial family, which includes his Kenyan wife, and their children.
