Mumbrellacast: The Opera House debate, Ten’s reality pickle and Google+ is dead

Listen Later

This week, a huge promotion for The Everest Horse race was beamed onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House ahead of the race on Saturday. In the latest edition of Mumbrellacast, we break down exactly why the entire advertising community had something to say about it, and assess if the slippery slope argument might actually be valid.
We also take a moment to reflect on the passing of Google+, which was “sunsetted” after it was revealed the tech giant had known about a security breach affecting 500,000 users for six months before telling anyone about it.
Plus, The Bachelor finished and The Bachelorette began – but is Ten becoming a one-trick pony? And in this week’s creative corner, we profess our love of Volkswagen’s latest ad from safely within our adland bubble – but will consumers actually care?
In the news
Will the Opera House become Sydney’s latest and largest billboard? (01:14)
Survivor and The Bachelor finales prove a hit for Ten – but can it bounce back after The Bachelorette’s blow? (10:59)

Plus, in a Project Zeus-themed interview (watch this if you have no idea what that means), Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes and Marketo’s chief growth officer Jill Rowley attempt to untangle the realities of a world where sales and marketing are growing ever closer (30:48).
However, when it comes to who’s on top, Rowley doesn’t believe in a fight. She instead sees the trend moving away from strict siloed department heads towards the more all-encompassing chief growth officer – which just so happens to be Rowley’s title.
But when it all comes down to it, she says, the debate is ultimately redundant, because “it’s the perspective of the individual, and do they see things through the modern lens?”
