Rescue missions to reach people trapped inside caves have been in the news lately, with a crew in the southeast Asian country of Laos racing against the clock to save villagers who’ve been stuck deep inside one for just over 2 weeks. The operation is one of a number of highly risky rescue missions that happen across the world every year. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at what attracts people into cave systems, who rescues them if they get into trouble, and what’s involved…

Artificial intelligence is the topic of a lot of conversations at the moment - and recent research commissioned by Minderoo Foundation shows that us Aussies have a bunch of concerns. So thanks to Minderoo, we’ve been able to talk to some of those experts in a special Squiz Series of podcasts on AI. 

First up is Professor Nicole Gillespie - she’s the Chair of Organisational Trust with KPMG and she’s involved in polling the public on their level of trust in AI. So she’s an expert in public sentiment towards it - and she talks about how we’re feeling now in Australia, why we rank particularly low when it comes to attitudes towards AI, and where you can go if you’re keen to upskill.

The sport of ice hockey has transcended a game just for the fans this year as it's found itself at the centre of a couple of big cultural moments across the world. We’re talking, of course, about the raging success of TV shows Heated Rivalry and more recently Off Campus - but it goes well beyond that and into real life. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll get you across the impacts of those shows on the sport and, as the current season of the North American competition comes to its conclusion, we’ll get you across one of the hardest sporting trophies in the world to win - the Stanley Cup.

Watching: The gold medal game from the Winter Olympics in Italy earlier this year - Team USA v Canada. The Hughes brothers are a whole thing in the NHL - they made it onto Saturday Night Live after Jack Hughes scored the golden goal in overtime after being whacked in the face and losing teeth. Head to the last 5 mins of the game if you don’t want to watch it all. 

Watching: The TV series Shoresy… Before Heated Rivalry, Jacob Tierney was central to the comedy shows Letterkenny and Shoresy, which have ice hockey at their core. To set expectations, there’s not a lot of spicy content, but they are shows with a lot of heart that go to the ethos of the game… You can watch both of those for free on SBS.
