From the Mediterranena to Afro-America

Comenzamos con novedades discográficas en el sur de Europa que nos llevan por Cataluña, Mallorca, Serbia y Croacia, para saltar al continente africano y allí disfrutar con nuevos discos de artistas de Guinea Bissau, Mali y Zimbabue. En este país nos quedamos un poco más, para homenajear a la artista recién desaparecida Stella Chiweshe. Nos vamos ahora a América, donde nos siguen acompañando raíces sonoras africanas, con sabrosas reediciones discográficas desde Colombia y Perú, las afinidades brasileñas de un ucraniano en Atlanta y, cerrando el círculo en el Mediterráneo, la música de una artista brasileña desde Italia.

We start with new recordings from southern Europe, which take us through Catalonia, Mallorca, Serbia and Croatia, to jump to the African continent and there enjoy new albums by artists from Guinea Bissau, Mali and Zimbabwe. In this country we stay a little longer, to pay tribute to the recently deceased artist Stella Chiweshe. We now move on to America, where we continue to be accompanied by African musical roots, with tasty re-releases from Colombia and Peru, the Brazilian affinities of a Ukrainian musician in Atlanta and, closing the circle in the Mediterranean, the music of a Brazilian artist in Italy.

We complete our review of the artists and other professionals inducted into the Transglobal World Music Hall of Fame, with special mention to the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, now in exile. We continue with historic Jamaican recordings, Lisbon fado and the latest Balkan World Music Chart of 2022, greeting its number 1, the Greek Dimitris Mystakidis.

We present the three Mundofonías' favorite albums for January 2023, with the international group based in Canada Taraf Syriana, with echoes from the Middle East and the Balkans; the Germans World Wide Wig, compiling global resonances, and the Adyghe or Circassian Damir Guagov & Asker Sapiev, from the Caucasus. We continue with a sonic journey through the five continents that will take us to Galicia, North America, Scandinavia, the Sahel, New Zealand, Korea and Georgia (the one in the Caucasus).

In the heart of the Amazon

Nos adentramos en el Amazonas más profundo en busca de sus músicas. En la Amazonía peruana descubrimos sonidos de la región selvática de los 70 y 80 rescatados por el sello Analog Africa. Y, río abajo, en Brasil nos encontramos con las producciones de Alter do Som, desde el estado de Pará, disfrutando allí con el carimbó y otros ritmos de la tierra. Rematamos con más sones latinoamericanos desde Brasil, Colombia y Argentina.

We dive into the deepest Amazon in search of its music. In the Peruvian Amazon we discover sounds from the jungle region of the 70s and 80s reissued by the label Analog Africa. And downstream, in Brazil, we find the releases of Alter do Som, from the state of Pará, where we enjoy carimbó and other rhythms coming from that land. We finish with more Latin American tunes from Brazil, Colombia and Argentina.

Old roots, new sprouts

Lo que somos hoy es el resultado de miles de años de historia, de viajes y de encuentros entre los diferentes pueblos. Exploramos algunas de esas raíces entrelazadas por todo el Viejo Mundo a través de recientes producciones discográficas, como las de los húngaros y los pueblos túrquicos, o la de los antiguos búlgaros y los pueblos del Volga y los Urales. Escuchamos otras músicas de raíz e inspiración popular con tratamientos muy diversos, desde el estrictamente acústico al electrónico o guitarrero, viajando también por Lituania, Letonia, China, Irlanda, Bélgica, Italia, Escandinavia y España.

What we are today is the result of thousands of years of history, travels and encounters between different peoples. We explore some of those roots intertwined throughout all the Old World through recent recordings, such as those of the Hungarians and the Turkic peoples, or that of the Bulgars and the peoples of the Volga and the Urals. We listen to other roots and folk-inspired music with very diverse treatments, from the strictly acoustic to the electronic or guitar-based, travelling also through Lithuania, Latvia, China, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Scandinavia and Spain.
