Described as the worst massacre Cape Town and the country had ever experienced, in 2003, 9 innocent men lost their lives in a brutal and heart wrenching manner. The police would arrive at the unsuspecting Seapoint property to find not only the radio blasting the lyrics…

Life is too short to have sorrow. You may be here today and gone tomorrow…”

…but that the inside the house on 7 Graham road resembled a blood bath. Copious amounts of blood pooled on the floors, splattered the walls and even the ceilings. The area would later be described as having the stench of petrol, blood and death hanging in the air. As the events of the night would later transpire, friends, family and onlookers would be left questioning so much.

This is the gut wrenching case of the Sizzlers Massacre.

A man, so close to her, so loved by her, was watching her succeed during this time but instead of joy- resentment was building. Bitter at his own failings and unable to accept accountability for his behaviours, he did something so horrific that the small town of Clanwilliam would never forget. On that fateful day in October, the only mistake that this woman would make was trusting the wrong person.

That very same afternoon in another part of the city- a woman is making a cup of tea. She sits down on her couch, switches on the tv just as a familiar face flashes across the screen. The words ‘suspect’ appear below the identikit of this rather unremarkable but yet recognisable face. The woman stifles a gasp and immediately reaches over for her phone. On the other end of the line- the police hear a female speaking and she says: “I saw the identikit and I think I know the man you’re looking for”.

This is the story of the serial crimes of a callous and cruel man. This is the disturbing case of Jacobus Johannes Steyn.
