Murder & "The Unwritten Law"
News of the Times Episode 238 | 1922 & 1926
The “Unwritten Law”, when a person can take vengeance on another for a slur upon the family honour, is very un-English. It is more to be expected from the French, although it is now called “Crimes of Passion”.
France is indeed the location of our first case which comes from Bordeaux in 1922. Actress Gabrelle Perron is being cheated upon with her husband having placed the new mistress in apartments across the street. In a fit of jealous passion, Mme Perron shoots her husband. The trial and verdict were worthy of a heavy melodrama that fascinated the English at the time.
Then, in 1926, we English had our own salacious version of the same love triangle with tragic consequences. The players in this drama are an international sports figure and the heir to two fortunes from Canada. Was it a planned murder, manslaughter, or just an unfortunate event? The theatrics from the defence, Sir Marshall Hall, had at least one member of the court in uncontrollable tears.
Two cases of murder and the “Unwritten Law” is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
