Murderous Butcher Bichel - The Butcher and the Ripper
News of the Times Episode 408 | 1808 & 1888
1888 London, and all of England is highly disturbed by the horrendous slashings taking place in Whitechapel which are both horrific and seemingly motiveless.
Investigative reporters, scientists and historians come out to see if a precedent can be found that may help explain the mind of the killer haunting the streets of Whitechapel.
From here, the story of Andreas Bichel comes to the forefront from 80 years before.
Quiet, married and unassuming, girls who vast Bichel have a habit of disappearing again and again.
Finally, with the last disappearance, the missing girl’s sisters notice that pieces of her clothing have been given to the tailors to be remade at the orders of Mr Bichel.
Police are called in.
Articles of clothing are found, but no bodies of the multiple missing girls until one of the policemen notices that the dog seems both excited and disturbed around the wood pile.
This fascinating case was referred to again and again in the 1888 papers of the time. We take a look at the infamous Bichel case – the background, the crimes and the conclusion.
For those who like the odd, we have an additional case under our further particulars segment at the end of the episode. It takes place around the same time as the Bichel case. And like that case, it has a follow up some 80+ years later…
Hosted by Robin Coles.
