News of the Times Episode 260 | 1861 & 1881
Our first case from 1861 is the famous Martin Doyle case – one of the few prisoners who, quite unusually, was executed for attempted murder.  The absolute repeated battering in the face of his victim who he left for dead was thwarted as she survived and managed to crawl into the road for help.  As she gave evidence with difficulty at his trial, it was said her features were so mangled it was hard to believe she was still alive.
Our second case from 1881 is the all too sad familiar case of a drunken spree of a couple that goes terribly wrong.  What sets this case apart was the incredibly horrible and unique way in which he killed her.  The principal witness in the trial was the nine-year-old daughter.
