She had 23 stab wounds, including ten to the back of her own neck, 31 bruises in varying stages of healing, and a serrated kitchen knife buried four inches into her chest. The city of Philadelphia ruled it a suicide, and they have spent the last fourteen years defending that conclusion against independent forensic experts, two civil lawsuits, a Pennsylvania Supreme Court petition, and a court-mandated reinvestigation in which five out of seven outside consultants disagreed with them. The original pathologist who changed the ruling to suicide later signed a sworn statement saying it should be classified as something other than suicide. The city's own neuropathologist testified that Ellen may have already been dead when at least one of those wounds was inflicted. The crime scene was cleaned the day after her body was found. Evidence was removed from the apartment by her fiancé's uncle (the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Judicial Conduct Board) before police had a search warrant. The security guard that the medical examiner cited as a key reason for changing the ruling was never actually there. In February 2025, the city settled with Ellen's family for $650,000, made them promise to never sue again, conducted their reinvestigation, found 23 more injuries they somehow missed the first time, and still said suicide. Today we're going through the whole thing, because Ellen Greenberg deserves a lot better than what Philadelphia gave her.
