I’ll tell you, right up front, it’s a metaphor for Heaven. And I didn’t come up with the metaphor because I had to. Because if someone told me I had to, I probably would’ve skipped the whole darn thing. Yeah, I guess I’m just one of those hardheaded writers who doesn’t want to be told how or what to write. So, I said all that to explain why I called the song Angel Café.

After all, I’m sure you realize you can’t hang out at the Angel Café here on earth. So, a place with that name must be a place you’ll only be able to visit after you die.

Uh oh. I just did a quick search, online, and it turns out there IS an Angel Café right here on Earth. But I can tell you, with 99.99% certainty, that it’s not THE Angel Café. And I can say that confidently because first it appears to be in Turkey. And there ain’t no angels in Turkey. Second, it. was created by human beings from Turkey. And human beings are not, and never will be, angels.

Anyway…

THE Angel Café it’s just a pigment of my imagination. And because I thought it was a colorful and creative way to describe putting something off till it’s too late I wrote a song about it. I’ve shared the song here on my website (and on my podcast) before. But with the things that have happened in the past couple of months, and other things I’ve observed in my extended family, I thought it might bear repeating.

Is there something you’d like to share with someone? Or maybe there’s something you wish they would tell you? Regardless, here’s the point. In case you never heard this before, you ain’t getting any younger. No one is.

One of these days, when you least expect it, in most cases, it’ll be too late to say what’s on your mind or get those questions answered. Once you breathe your last breath, all opportunities are lost. And that might be forever. Because you might be separated from that certain person forever.

So I encourage you, today (in fact, right now, if you can), to make and take an opportunity to say or ask what needs to be said or asked. Tomorrow will get here and turn into today. But you have absolutely NO guarantee you’ll still be here then. If the last two months have taught me anything, and they have, it’s that drastic changes can happen in the blink of an eye. I like the song says, don’t put off who you should get to today. Because you might not be able to meet up in the…

Ipecac. No, I’m not talking about the story of the headless horseman. I’m talking about syrup. And this ain’t from Aunt Jemima or even Cousin T’s.

In fact, ipecac is what they use in medical situations (poisonings, etc.) to induce vomiting. So, obviously it’s not something your body needs or wants.

And yet, would you believe people have used it (and somebody probably is even as you read this) to look good? Well, sort of.

One famous example is Karen Carpenter, who died at the prime age of 32. She died of a cardiac arrest at her parent’s house on this day, February 4, back in 1983. And the coroner’s report listed the cause of death as “imbalances associated with anorexia nervosa.” Yeah, Karen used ipecac syrup to vomit so she could lose weight and look slim and good, according to her misguided standards.

What a sad story. And a sad loss. Because she was SO talented. In fact, she had one of the purest voices in pop music. Ever. Plus, she could even play drums so well that she was voted best rock drummer of 1975. Go figure.

Karen, and her brother Richard, better known as The Carpenters, won Grammy awards for best song and best performance by a pop duo, for We’ve Only Just Begun, in 1971. They won the Grammy for best album of the year again in 1972. And they won the American Music Awards best pop duo in 1975. They were also nominated for lots of other awards. Back when awards weren’t some weird freak show.

Because soon after their first awards and successes in 1970 Karen’s self image problems started. And they never really went away until she finally did in 1983.

It’s a little bit ironic that someone who appeared to have a heart to help and please others would die from ipecac syrup which destroys the heart muscles.

Twenty-six years ago I remember hearing somebody say how corrupt our government has become. And they said it felt like people who want to stand up for truth, justice, and the American way (to quote from the old Superman TV show) just face impossible odds. Of course, it can feel like that. These days it can feel like that way more than back then. But I mentioned, then, and I’ll say it again. There’s an easy cure. But it appears to be WAY too difficult for most people on the planet.

Now just because it’s an easy cure doesn’t mean there won’t be any problems for anyone who does that. In fact, as you probably well know, people who dare call themselves Christians are seeing persecution all around the world.

If you know someone who’s facing a steep uphill battle right now, be sure to encourage them with more than just saying the words, “I’ll pray for you.” Tell them you’ll be glad to do whatever you can to help them. And follow up the words with action. Because you might be their answer from God. You might be how He helps them face…

You say you’re feeling empty and it doesn’t go away.

You say you don’t believe me and you couldn’t be that sure.

You can’t begin the day; it’s impossible.

The anchors, the weather and sports reporters, the investigative reporters, and the editorialists all talked a blue streak night after night. So, it was ironic when Theo felt something like the stroke of a paintbrush across his heart. Because it wasn’t the same feeling as a physical paintbrush stroke.

And it happened as he listened to a late night, local talkshow host talk about something in the Bible. But the host didn’t sound like a preacher. He sounded more like a reporter who related current events to verses in the Bible. And every time he pointed out another truth, it tore away another layer of darkness from Theo’s eyes. The truth sort of pierced right into him like a needle in the hand of skilled nurse. No pain.

So, night after night, Theo would tune in. And night after night he’d hear more truth that he hadn’t heard from churches and other religious organizations. Plus, the talk show host included hilarious entertainment by taking calls from people, all around the country, who disagreed with him.

Theo noticed a pattern form. Many people from all around the country clearly despised the talk show host. And most of them could only express their contempt for him with insults and complaints. They refused to believe the words he read, directly from the Bible, were actually words in the Bible. Because, like me, they also hadn’t heard those messages in church. Or from any Christians they knew.

So, Theo tuned in to the show, for months. He couldn’t find any points of contention or disagreement with the talk show host.

And he enjoyed how the host ended his shows with “Do right. And risk the consequences.”

Then, one day, after watching a particularly entertaining episode of the show, Theo’s brain lit up with some lyrics. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Theo’s an excellent songwriter. So, he wrote down the words, editing as he wrote (because that’s the best way). And he twiddled around with some chords and progressions as he ironed out the verses and chorus.

“There’s a blue streak like a paintbrush stroke through my heart.”

Right? You picked up on that whole connection I’ll betcha. And I bet you get this next line, too.

“It’s a cool light and it tears the darkness apart.”

How about it? The lyrics make a lotta sense, since you read a little bit of the backstory. Can I get an Amen? So, any guesses on the next line? Try these next two lines:

“I’m so near it; though it pierces me I don’t fear it.

I don’t know about you, but that gave me goosebumps. OK, maybe little goslingbumps. But I really enjoy observing a maestro’s mind at work.

“It has a very hypnotic groove, a samba, which has a tremendous hypnotic power, rather like good dance music. It doesn’t speed up or slow down. It keeps this constant groove. Plus, the actual samba rhythm is a great one to sing on, but it’s also got some other suggestions in it, an undercurrent of being primitive. Because it is a primitive African, South American, Afro-whatever-you-call-that rhythm.”

What are we talkin’ about here?

Obviously a song. But what song? There are basically countless songs to choose from that fit that description. And so many of them entice your toes to tap, your fingers to snap, and your heart to chance a little dance.

Well, if you care about your fellow man (aka: love your neighbor as yourself), then it’s probably easy to prepare to offer sympathy. Especially if it can help ease someone’s pain and suffering. Right?

Yeah, fair enough. But the hypnotic groove I refer to, here, isn’t asking for sympathy for your neighbor or fellow man. Far from it.

In fact, the lyrics request sympathy for the one who has NO sympathy for you, me, or any human being. Rather ironic, to say the least.

The song, with the so-called hypnotic groove, takes the first person narrative perspective. And the “person” it represents is your most dangerous enemy. The one who wants your soul to endure eternal torment in a place so awful that mere words fail to thoroughly describe it.

Does that sound like someone you wanna show sympathy?

I don’t.

But Mick Jagger (and possibly Keith Richards) thought there might be reason enough to show Sympathy For The Devil. So, way back in 1968 they recorded the song with that title.

Of course, that truth is overshadowed by the songwriter’s bias. But the overall concept is that Lucifer, or Satan, or the Devil, was around for all the worst atrocities in history. And that’s basically true.

But take this verse, for example:

I was ’round when Jesus Christ

I don’t take issue with any of those lyrics except the word, doubt. So, some truth peppered with some misinformation. Then, some blame game lyrics that lack wisdom:

I watched with glee while your kings and queens

Yes, humans are to blame for much of the evil in this world. But individually. Not corporately. You commit your crimes and sins. And I commit mine. So, somebody “killed the Kennedys.” But it wasn’t you. And it wasn’t me. Also, the devil is not a man. So, he has no wealth and taste. Unless you count the souls he’s destroyed as wealth and his attention to chaos, confusion, and corruption as taste.

I enjoy the percussive, samba beat to the song. And the instrumentation, too. I’ve never been a fan of Mick’s vocals. So, even if the song wasn’t peppered with bias and misinformation, it still wouldn’t be hit material in my world. Clear up those lyrical problems and insert Michael McDonald’s voice or Kenny Loggins voice, and then you got the goods.

And I most likely wouldn’t have talked about this song at all except it popped up on my radar, that it’s Mick Jagger’s 80th birthday. I don’t know this for a fact, but my guess is the 80 year old Mick probably still has the same perspective as the 25 year old Mick. I hope, for his sake, that he comes to realize his misplaced sympathy. And wouldn’t it be cool if he came up with a hypnotic groove for the One who will defeat the devil once and for all?

Yeah, it’s enjoyable to daydream.

It was fifteen years ago, next month, that some friends of mine attempted to put together and display the largest protest sign ever. The event took place in Golden, Colorado (near Denver) to send a message to the Democratic National Convention held in that city. And, according to the Guinness Book of World RecordsTM they succeeded.

According to American Right to Life, an abortion abolition organization, the sign “…weighs more than 2,700 pounds and was sewed together with more than four miles of seams connecting 2,400 sheets. And backpacked onto location and unfurled by 44 letter carriers with spotters a mile away to ensure proper letter placement.”

And the group added, for anyone concerned about environmental impact, “After three hours ARTL removed the DNC Sheets Of Shame and left the area cleaner than it had been.”

And the width wasn’t accidental. If you weren’t there, or you’ve never seen the sign, here’s a music video:

I was juggling three jobs, at the time, and was only able to make it to the mountainside (with my video camera) as they were coming back down. The higher elevation in Colorado can really tax your breathing. But everyone was walking back down with smiles on their faces, praises to God, and even some singing. Pretty cool.

At that time in history, abortion had already claimed the lives of at least 40 million Americans. And, sadly, many millions more have been murdered in the fifteen years since then. That’s despite the efforts of most pro life organizations to establish, market, and support abortion regulation. A horrible plan. With obviously horrible results.

I saw a meme that drove home this point. It had a picture, from some time in the 1850’s I think, of a slave with chains on his neck. And the text that went with the picture said that he was not a person. Next to that picture was one of an unborn baby. And the text that went with it said, “And now this isn’t a person either.”

You and I, and every other person who has ever lived on this beautiful blue planet, are human beings. People. Persons. Not “viable persons.” And not “self-sustaining persons.” Just persons. Made in God’s image and likeness.

So, even if the largest protest sign ever didn’t stop the killing, every person has equal value and a…

When tiny seeds take root in tiny eggs,

I was an unborn child until the day I was born.

Everyone has a right to life.

(Repeat)

When you’re born, and someone lets you live,

Give yourself some room to think about

Everyone has a right to life.

Imagination can be an awesome and powerful force. But it can be used for good OR evil. So, it can also be a hypocritical and destructive force. You can imagine yourself flying, on your own power, over the clouds and even through the ocean. And you can imagine no possessions in a world where everyone shares everything. And you can imagine you’re more virtuous than the next person because you say so.

Yeah, that’s a phrase from the lyrics to John Lennon’s song, “Imagine.” And when you examine his lyrics, and then examine his actual life, there’s a (more than) slight discrepancy. I’ll share a glaring example of that further down.

It doesn’t exactly show up in the first verse:

“Imagine there’s no heaven

No, that’s just the musings of someone who’d rather BE God than acknowledge the exist of THE God. And I consider it a very weak and hopeless use of imagination. Because it implies there’s nothing to look forward to after you die. So, people should be “living for today.” Because tomorrow might be the end.

Then, Mr. Lennon (supposedly with the help of his wife, Yoko) expanded on his need to BE God. In fact, he decided his worldview, which opposes God, is the one that can deliver peace.

“Imagine there’s no countries

And he basically said if everyone else would just be a dreamer, too, we’d have one, big, happy world. Yeah, the ol’ one world order dream. Didn’t some wise guy said there’s nothing new under the sun? So, nothing new to see here either.

“You may say I’m a dreamer

So, it’s cool for John to suggest everybody be like him. But it’s not cool for me to suggest being like Jesus. OK, good to know. Anyway…now we get to the part where Mr. (and maybe Mrs.) Lennon reveal his hypocrisy, although I’m sure that’s not what he intended.

“Imagine no possessions

Well, evidently John only imagined those concepts. Because he sure didn’t carry them out. At least not the way the lyrics would have you imagine (see what I did there?) His estimated net worth, at the time of his death in 1980, was somewhere around $200 million. That’s equal to about $620 million in today’s money.

Even fancy schmancy stuff. Matter of fact, on this date (June 29), in 1985, his 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine, with psychedelic paintwork, sold for a record amount. $3,006,385. It was part of a Sotheby’s auction in New York. They don’t auction off used cheap stuff, by the way.

So, just think. If John Lennon would have actually shared “all the world” instead of only imagining it, he could have given 200 people/families $1,000,000 each. That’s one million dollars to 200 homes. Can you imagine what a difference that could have made in their lives.

But maybe John wasn’t really a hypocrite. And maybe he just didn’t get around to sharing before his untimely death, at the hands of a deranged murderer. (side note: if only that murderer would have paid more attention to John’s lyrics)

Yeah, maybe John knew his fortune would be in the hands of his benevolent and caring, sharing wife. After all, Yoko was with him at all the “give peace a chance” photo ops. So, surely she spread the wealth. Right?

Well, according to the online sources I’ve seen, Yoko’s net worth is somewhere around $700 million. But she’s probably just ironing out the details for which 700 people/families will each get a million dollars. Because, it’s gotta be SO difficult for her to have all that dough AND imagine no possessions.

What do these words have in common: abstruse, Delphic, incomprehensible, indecipherable, inexplicable, oracular, paradoxical, recondite, and unfathomable. According to the dictionary, they’re all synonyms of enigmatic. Sounds like I’m about to give a language lesson. But I’m not. This is about music’s mystery.

And, if you think jazz-fusion is as enjoyable as fingernails on a chalkboard, then you might as well move on to something else right now. Because I just had a few jazz-fusion thoughts pop into my head, and, as I’m so often wont (no, not won’t, spellchecker) to do, I’m sharing them here.

Two streams of thoughts sprang out of something I read about the origin of everyone’s favorite instrument. That’s right. The little violin. It’s an instrument that can provide a wide variety of enigmatic sounds. From the lush arrangements in Beethoven compositions, to the fiery fiddle in Charlie Daniels’ Devil Went Down To Georgia.

But where the violin really goes off the charts is in the hands of a jazz-fusion artist. The one I’m most familiar with is playing in my earbuds as I write this. Jean-Luc Ponty. A record story clerk told me about him way back in 1977 as I purchased the Dan Fogelberg Netherlands album I mentioned recently. And the clerk suggested Ponty’s album, Enigmatic Ocean. It goes nicely with my fresh-brewed dark roast coffee.

Don’t listen to it if you don’t like jazz, especially jazz-fusion. Don’t buy it if you don’t care for music from the 1970’s. And definitely don’t even look for it on YouTube (https://youtu.be/Maau6OPVMz8) if improvisation without the benefit of vocals ain’t your thang.

But, if you appreciate a group of musicians playing in sync so well it sounds like they’re using the same brain, then you might find Enigmatic Ocean interesting. And if a rocked-out electric violin piques your interest, Jean-Luc can certainly show you.

As enigmatic the sounds coming off this album are, they’re not my favorite violin expressions. I still say you can’t go wrong with the Maestro, Beethoven. Here’s a nice concerto: (https://youtu.be/hyMfJa8qN2Q)

And there’s nothing like Celtic strings to tug at your heartstrings in an emotional movie scene.

Recently, someone, on social media, shared a picture of the inside of a violin. And they noted how it looks like an amazing concert hall in there. And, sure enough, it does. So, that inspired me to write about the construction of our little friend, the violin. Here’s that tribute…

Tucson, Arizona. Central New Mexico. Music. Moonlight. Dan Fogelberg. Storytelling. All parts of “the road” from a long time ago. And, early this morning, I thought about an incredible, singular experience I had during a full moon drive. Strangely enough, it was a motion-sensor light that triggered that full moon memory.

Yeah, I got out of bed and started to get dressed in the dark. Just as I always do. Because a beautiful wife should have all the beauty sleep she can get. So, flipping on the overhead light would just be rude and uncalled for. And I’m nothing if not considerate and called for.

Anyway…

As I dressed, the motion-sensor light in back of the house suddenly lit up and seeped through the window blinds. It wasn’t as bright as the overhead bedroom light would have been. But it definitely gave the room a sort of moonlit glow. And I peeked out the window to be sure there were no prowlers or ferocious animals I’d have to slay. No intruders in sight. Probably just a bird flying by that triggered the light.

So, I finished dressing and went to the kitchen to brew some wake up elixir, as I always do. And as I measured out the dark-roasted coffee beans, and drew the pure water from our gravity filter, I kept thinking of how that fluorescent light reminded me of that full moon drive, years ago.

The memory of the wavy road, in the wee winter hours, reminded me of when I first learned about metaphors and similes in school. My English composition book shared examples of each. And one of the examples of a metaphor was “the road was a ribbon of light.” I remember thinking, “Hey, I’m on that road all these years later.”

Dan Fogelberg released his eighth album, Windows and Walls, in 1984 (the year of my full moon drive). And one song was called “Tucson Arizona (Gazette). He said he wrote the song based on a story he read in that paper. And the song is a little over eight and half minutes long. But if you like Spanish-sounding guitar riffs and percussion (I DO), the song certainly doesn’t feel long.

And that’s the song I played several times over as I drove my little Toyota pickup through the cold, New Mexico night. On a secondary highway heading north toward I-40. The full moon reflected on the road. And there were basically no other cars. So, I turned off my headlights and skimmed across that ribbon of light.

I could see almost as easily without the headlights. Because the reflection from the road seemed to amplify and magnify the moonlight. It was exhilarating. And obviously a sensory experience I’ll never forget.

None of that experience, nor any others like it, could ever happen without the love of God. Because, without Him, there would only be darkness and void. In fact, he inspired Moses to describe the light He made for us. So, Moses wrote this:

“Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness.”

Think about that. Those lights RULE. You and I have zero control over whether the sun and moon will shine or not. So, in a sense, they rule their light over us. Day WILL be lit up by the sun. And the moon lights the nights. Well, the stars, too. But the main light is the moon.

And those lights in the sky are indicators of how important light is to God. Then, when you go to the other end of the Bible, you discover that, in Heaven, there won’t be a sun and moon. What? If light is so important to Him, why would Heaven have no sun or moon? Simple. Yet almost impossible to imagine. God will BE the light.

And that Ribbon of Light will wrap around anyone who chooses to be there. That includes you. Right?

If not, consider taking a full moon drive, out West, the next chance you get. Turn off your headlights. And think about what could happen if you accidentally ended up in a ditch because you missed something on the road. And think about if you ended up like Tony and Mary, in Dan Fogelberg‘s song. Where would you go or be?

But that could only happen if you had already chosen wisely. Otherwise, you could just be another side story in a small newspaper. And Dan won’t write a song about you. Because he left this planet years ago. And even I might not be around to write a song about you.

So, don’t put it off. Choose your Creator and you’ll feel (and be) more alive than you can imagine.

I worked in a disco. Yep. It’s true. I was a bartender. And I also worked as what they called a “floorwalker.” That was one of the guys who (you guess it) walked around the floor to make sure they were having a good time and behaving. And at the end of the night, I sang Better Off Dead.

(Are you with me so far?)

But it was often. And it was because my fellow workers found out I could sing. And they challenged me to see if I truly knew every word to every Elton John song. Which I did. At the time. And one of those songs was from his Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album.

It was the shortest song on the album. Just two minutes and about thirty-seven second. But it was super catchy. And the other workers, in the disco, dared me to get on the club’s huge sound system and sing the high harmonies. So, I did it. Then, they “demanded” I do it almost nightly. And I was happy to oblige.

The chorus to the song goes like this:

‘Cause the steam’s in the boiler, the coal’s in the fire.

Since my disco days I’ve gone through a lot of changes. From my musical position. To my musical preferences. And now to my musical musings on TonyFunderburk.com and in my emails, etc.

I discovered, to my dismay, that Elton John was a homosexual. And I’ve felt sorry for him ever since. Not because of his life on Earth. Because he’s rich enough to want for nothing. But for his eternal soul. Because Elton is an old man now. And each day he’s much closer to finding out what comes next.

Sadly, if my worldview is right (and the evidence says it is), Elton’s soul is in great peril. Yes, I know that he’s got millions of dollars and millions of fans. And I know I’m not better than him. But…

I think we can agree…I’m not better than you.

I’m better off…

So, I’m not better than any person who sins.
