After heroically saving a teenager who had wandered onto the test site, Banner was caught in the full force of the gamma radiation. Instead of being killed, the radiation altered his body, triggering a transformation into a monstrous, super-strong being known as the Hulk. This change is not random; it is tied directly to Banner's emotions, with moments of intense stress or rage causing him to transform, becoming an embodiment of his own deeply buried anger and inner turmoil.
