We're speaking with Mutual Friends founder, Jesse Coren!

Jesse Coren is the name behind some of your favorite artists—Jeremy Zucker, Chelsea Cutler, Quinn XCII, and ayokay. He founded Mutual Friends, a New York-based artist management company partnered with Visionary Music Group, in 2017 after a decade at dGi Management. Coren says the mission of Mutual Friends is to “bring good to the universe through art and music” and support the artists on his roster. Mutual Friends is now a team of four, but it didn’t start out that way: Coren was initially the sole manager for his clientele when he started up the company and continues to expand his team. Over years of working for management companies, Coren has amassed extensive knowledge on every aspect of the music and creative industries, especially the drastic ways it’s changed largely due to the rise of social media platforms.

Music You’re Missing spoke to Coren about social media, independent artists, work-life balance, advice for aspiring managers, philanthropy, and more.

In this episode, Brendan is joined by #UPNEXTFEST co-booker Matt D'Amico.

Conversation includes:

- Throwing up at the GRAMMYs

- Deciding on booking #UPNEXTFEST

- Choosing the lineup for #UPNEXTFEST

- Lots of laughs and swears

Don't know everyone on the #UPNEXTFEST lineup? That's the point!

Maeko:

Never one to be defined by a label, Maeko is as genre-less as he is independent. As if sewing an heirloom blanket, Maeko infuses pieces of himself into everything he crafts.

Our recommended track: Cool

Sectiontoo:

Hailing from Queens, New York, singer/songwriter Sectiontoo prides himself on diverse musicianship, while maintaining consistent connection with his growing fanbase. Sectiontoo and his production partner, identity crisis, deliver moody strains of emotionally-driven R&B, blended with soulfully constructed lo-fi harmonies.

Our recommended track: Come See Me Tonight

Retrograded:

Retrograded is the solo project of California born, Brooklyn resident Jackson Klarsfeld. Inspirations include feeling cozy, film grain, light through trees, and figuring it out as you go.

Our recommended track: Hi, I Miss You

STEFAN THEV:

While STEFAN THEV has been making music for the better part of the last decade, he started from scratch in 2021. Reaching a point in his artistic journey where he had created himself anew, STEFAN’s freshly renovated catalog is one that stands with vast formidability. Making use of a post punk style of instrumentation, and coating it with a fluttering array of vocals that contain a high prevalence of energy, STEFAN is an all-encompassing artist!

Our recommended track: ghouls! zombies! skeletons!
