This week we chat with Kieran Davey about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the musical parody of The Fellowship of the Ring - Fellowship! the Musical Parody!
Kris Noteboom said “J.R.R. Tolkien’s books are ripe for parody. Heavy drama, weird names, weird creatures, an arduous quest with one of the most glaring plot holes in literary history. It’s all there. But, that actually makes creating a good parody difficult.
Thankfully, the authors have succeeded here. First, the songs are actually good and would stand up against anything in a traditional musical. The rock anthem between the awesome scene-stealing Strider (Greg Hullett) and the dynamic Arwen (Kelsey Milbourn), who also plays a great Legolas, is particularly fun.”

This week we chat with Laurene Cooper-Fox about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the Australian movie classic-turned-musical - Muriel’s Wedding!
The Sydney Morning Herald commented that: "Muriel's Wedding feels like the complete package: a beloved film seamlessly updated; a central character who retains all the ambiguities that made you root for her in the first place; a conspicuously inventive score peppered with classic pop hits, and a mainstage debut that will be talked about for years. Adapting his own screenplay to the stage and into the social media present, PJ Hogan's book amplifies the Cinderella aspects of Muriel's story without sacrificing the satirical and melancholic elements that gave the film its depth and heart."

This week we chat with Paige McKay about which of life's truths can be gleaned from woman-led classic - Little Women!
The Village Voice reviewer noted "The show itself, similarly, seems lost in the drafty hugeness of the Virginia, where the often charming family scenes are dwarfed by the high proscenium arch (emphasized by the metal scaffolding that frames Derek McLane's otherwise attractive settings). The pity of it is that, between seizures, so much of Little Women's reality has been established. Allan Knee's script offers long passages of astutely condensed Alcott; Jason Howland's pleasant music, inventively orchestrated by Kim Scharnberg, pulls contemporary shapes out of period waltzes, polkas, and quadrilles, bumpily but gamely supported by Mindi Dickstein's uneven lyrics. And the cast, as always, offers many potential rescuers."

This week we chat with Zoe Jeffrey about which of life's truths can be gleaned from not-a-Disney-film turned Broadway show - Anastasia!
The Hollywood Reporter reviewer, David Rooney, wrote "The seamlessness and storytelling economy of that opening sequence is quite impressive, deftly handling the ambiguity surrounding Anastasia's fate, while her family is murdered by revolutionaries. But the long first act gets bogged down, and while Ahrens and Flaherty certainly know how to craft a narrative-driven song, the music is more often serviceable than inspired. McNally's book dutifully follows the Disney-princess model...The second act picks up considerably with the 1927 move to Paris..."

In this special episode, we chat with Michael Grant of the United Kingdom about which of life's truths can be gleaned from his brand-new, ragtime-esque musical - It's Not Really The Apocalypse!
“Apocalypse”‘s 15 tracks work together just as a musical score should but when pulled apart and heard independently, still provide fully fleshed out ideas more than capable of entertaining on their own.”

This week we chat with Shannon Foley about which of life's truths can be gleaned from philosophical and incredibly not-historical opera/operetta/musical/whatever - Candide!
The tale that Voltaire's classic satire tells is long and winding. And the tale of the Broadway show or (as Bernstein called it) American operetta to its present state as quintessential American opera (or music theater piece) is also long and winding. Over the years the piece got new books, new numbers, additional lyrics and new orchestrations until Bernstein finally conducted the full score in London with narration and a cast of opera stars.
Since then Bernstein's "Candide" has belonged more to the opera house and concert stage than to Broadway. Many things to many people, "Candide" tempts interpreters. A wonderful musical performance by the New York Philharmonic in 2004, which was televised, was subverted by harebrained semi-staging. Two years later, a scandalous, politically way-incorrect opera production in Paris satirized a drunken chorus line of state leaders in skivvies (Bush, Blair, Berlusconi, Putin and Chirac, to be exact).

This week we chat with Mary Littlejohn about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the screen-spectacular turned stage-spectacular - Moulin Rouge!
Diane Snyder of The Telegraph praised the scenic design, choreography, and costume and wrote that "Moulin Rouge! may not have the depth of some of Broadway’s great musicals... [but] it’s fun, tuneful and entertaining, and that’s exactly what we need right now." Mashable's Erin Strecker said that "This is the best of what a jukebox musical can be; a thrilling burst of color and chorus and nostalgia and bold reimagining." Adam Feldman leaned positive as he called the show "an extravagant Broadway megamix," commenting that it "looks and feels expensive."
