🎙️ New Episode: Volunteer Extraordinaire!
In this episode, we sit down with Kaye and Des Hastie, a passionate volunteers and driving force behind the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation.
Kaye first met Perry Cross in the 1980s when he was a student at TSS and she coached his Under 14 basketball team, long before life would take an unexpected turn for him. Since joining the Foundation in 2013, Kaye has watched Perry face spinal injury with the same resilience, determination, and wicked sense of humour she remembers from his teenage years.
After an extraordinary teaching career for over 50 years teaching across Australia, Europe, Canada, Hong Kong, and Korea, she now calls the Gold Coast home. They dedicates countless hours to the foundation, supporting events, educating the public, sourcing sponsorship, and helping grow vital fundraising initiatives.
From the Everything is Possible Gala Dinner to the Legends Lunch, Kaye works tirelessly behind the scenes, spending months preparing auctions, securing support, and adapting to make the foundation stronger. Her ability to see beyond disability and focus on possibility is a gift, one she believes no alternative but to act: “You’ve just go to do it!”
This conversation unwraps community, compassion, and an unwavering belief in progress. It’s about the emotional highs and lows of spinal research, the power of volunteering, and a shared mission with one clear goal: To find a cure for paralysis and improve the quality of life for all those affected. Everything is possible when it comes to research, rehab, and recovery.
