Being dyslexic means we can find it so hard to get organised, get all the jobs done that we need to and not go into Christmas completely frazzled and exhausted!

Today I share with you my recent online shopping experiences - and what happens when we use our amazing visual imagination to choose our purchases.

Sometimes it can work out really well… but other times not so much!

Our amazing minds can visualise things in such detail, that often we can feel that it is real - even when it might not actually be!

I’m going to tell you about my shopping experience and how I was buying clothes for my life as it was 10 years ago - and it felt completely natural and current, until the clothes turned up!

Today I look at how, while there are many positives to being dyslexic, those old negative thought patterns and beliefs can still catch me out.

Those moments where you have double booked, forgotten something or like me think you have more time than you do.

They still happen, but it is how we react to it, that is the real key to being confident and capable.

This week I share how I did feel bad about a mix up with time management and how immediately I blamed myself, I took on the guilt and went straight into the old critiquing voice in my head.

Thankfully, now,  I don’t do this too often - but I did want to share that even though I fully believe and know being dyslexic is amazing - it’s not always a bed of roses!

As dyslexic’s we can have such amazing ideas, or visions of how we want something to look or be.   The problem is because we can see everything so clearly in our mind, we see all the details and know exactly how it should all look. It can be super hard for us to get past this vision, or idea and create something that doesn’t match it perfectly. Being like this means we can get derailed, or take an extraordinary amount of time to get the work finished, as we are trying to get it to match the vision we can see in our dyslexic imagination.

Dyslexia is such a contradiction of symptoms…   I can spell well but maths is a nightmare for me.   I know other dyslexics who really struggle with spelling but are great  at Maths.   One of the contradictions of Dyslexia is we can have incredibly good  common sense, or street smarts, or we are superb at reading people.   The flip side is we can be incredibly naive and just not see the obvious  pitfalls or problems that others do.   Realising why I did this has really helped me embrace my naivety and see  it as a good thing!

This week, I share how I went from sitting in bed on Saturday morning  frantically trying to finish work, and feeling completely overwhelmed  and rubbish about how little I had to achieved…To using a simple  technique to get tasks done AND change my mindset from one of failure to  I finished it!.   I share how my dyslexia means I always think I can do more than I  actually can and how that affects our motivation and self esteem.

You know what ? It takes a real talent to be late to an online meeting in lockdown.  

I mean all you have to do is turn your computer on and attend.    

Well welcome to dyslexia and how much it affects our sense of time!.    

I had to laugh when I was 15 mins late to an online meeting, there was  no traffic to negotiate, parking spaces to find, bus schedules, nope  just me having to go to my office.    In this episode I look at how being dyslexic affects our sense of time, and the knock on effects of that.

So anyone else lose their car in car parks ? 

Do you just have a complete  blank on where you parked ? 

Ever wander around a car park looking more  and more desperate as you try to find where you parked ?. 

This used to  happen to me all the time!. I have got much better at using my dyslexic  brain to help me remember where I parked, but there are times where it  still gets me.

Today I explore how we can do the opposite of what we want to do and  mean to do.  

That moment when your phone has the hang up and answer  icons on your front screen, your computer asks you do you want to update  now or later!. 

What it is about these simple questions that cause that  jam in our brain - and often lead us to doing the opposite of what we  wanted to?

Being dyslexic means we think visually, we think with our imaginations.    

This can be a huge talent and most of the time it is great I love it.    

However every now and then it can be really difficult.    

You see when we have pictured how something is going to work out, what  you will be doing, or what you are going to achieve - it can be really  stressful when that doesn’t happen, or when it changes.   

I experienced this when Auckland (NZ) went into lockdown very quickly  and unexpectedly.    

Understanding that our mind has pictured something in lots of detail,  and we have connected our motivation to that picture can mean we find it  hard when it doesn’t happen as we pictured it.
