Stop giving your services away. Patients don't really appreciate it, they expect it. When you do this, it gives dental insurance companies even more fuel to attempt to bundle your procedures, and there goes your profitability even more.

There are tons of great questions, comments, and advice that happens out there in the world of dentistry. Some of it antiquated, some of it out in left field, but there are many individuals out there who do know what they are talking about. Those individuals have kept up on their business and clinical skills. Unfortunately, there are many who continue to regurgitate misinformation as if it were dental business doctrine, because they heard it from some lecturer who professed to be an expert on their topic. Those wonderful people, the presenters and the receivers, simply don't know what they don't know. But when you do hear truth in dental business protocols, accept it, run with it, implement it in your dental practice.

You can have three things in every health care system: Those three things are affordability, universality, and quality. However, every health care system can only guarantee no more than two of the three at a time. Because of the current medical system, and their reimbursement rates, physicians have discovered a way to "upgrade" their services so they can maintain the quality of care they, and their patients, want to have. Dentistry is no different. Only thing is our upgrading comes in the form of products and procedures when done correctly with both insured and uninsured patients.

Those who control the words that are used in dentistry, control the mind of the dentist, dental team, and unfortunately the patient. The verbiage on estimation of benefits, or EOBs, are often times damaging to the doctor/patient relationship, make the front office look incompetent, and can simply damage the patient trust in a dental office. Words that are used have meaning, even when those words are misleading, or flat out dishonest. Dental teams need to push back, and call-out dental insurance companies when these tactics are used.

Insurance companies want us to bundle our services, team members think that layering fees will come across as "nickel and diming" our patients. The practice needs to be profitable. Understanding the definition of nickel and diming will help you overcome your unjustifiable feelings of guilt for charging for what you do.

We here at My Practice My Business are engaged in having restricting verbiage removed from the ADA CDT Code Books. Anesthesia and Suturing should not be given away as free ticket items to our patients. They come with a cost of goods to our practices just like anything else we do. You should be able to charge for the services you provide.
