Here are three tips to help you use confrontation productively and effectively.

When you identify an issue that must change, get clear on the specific behavior you want to change. Behavior drives results.Request a short meeting because confrontation is best done privately, not in a hallway or as an add-on to another meeting or call.After you clarify the cause and effect that you want to produce, ask for an agreement. Informing someone can enlarge awareness. Gaining an agreement establishes stakes in the relationship for both of you, even if you don't have a direct reporting relationship.

Track 1: The discussion was scattered and tense when she first arrived, so after building rapport and establishing some ground rules, Patty facilitated the first part of the discussion to clarify the top issues using the 4 steps to alignment.

Track 2: Consensus is where everyone is satisfied enough to get behind a decision. Concordance is where everyone is completely satisfied.

Propose - ideas are easier to debate when they are out of your head.Probe - set the expectation that others will want clarification and give them the opportunity to ask clarifying questions without judging, criticizing, or attacking. Re-propose - summarize the proposal taking into account new ideas and refinements during the probing discussion.Close - determine whether the proposal is good enough to go forward or needs to be set aside and reexamined.

Track 1: I'd like to share with you a valuable distinction between two types of mindfulness. After all, meditation often gets a bad reputation because some people only think of one aspect. 

Track 2: Here are the three fundamental steps to successfully setting up your distraction diet: Identify your core focus and responsibilities. This month it might be reducing customer churn, identifying the distractions from the other legitimate duties, and declaring what off limits and a period for your distraction diet is.

When the manager is doing the work of his direct reports, the manager's work gets less attention and energy. 1 + 1 = 0.5.
