Professor Malachy Friedman is a third-degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Master Ricardo Liborio of Carlson Gracie lineage. With almost 20 years of experience, Professor Friedman is adept in multiple fight disciplines including MMA, BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai and Wrestling.

Malachy started his training with the late UFC Middle-Weight Champion, Evan Tanner. After years of competition, he joined American Top Team in Coconut Creek (2006-2015) where he coached beginners and champs, including the late, great Kimbo Slice to his win against Ken Shamrock at Bellator. Malachy cornered and coached Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters, IBJJF and ADCC BJJ competitors, and hundreds of newcomers to the sport.

In addition to coaching, Malachy is both a strategist and innovator in the sport, having created video instructionals, The Darce Killer, The HeisenGuard, Flower Power, Sh*t Your Instructor Never Showed You, Unf*ck Your Jiu-Jitsu, and Acai Free. He is a regular podcast guest and creator and a contributor to Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
In 2015, Malachy brought his experience and knowledge back to his hometown of Charleston where with his wife, Sarah, they own and operate Black Label Martial Arts Academy. Malachy also owns Black Label Jiu-Jitsu Raiders Team and teaches free Women’s Self-Defense seminars to the Charleston and surrounding areas. Malachy teaches the same techniques in Women’s Self Defense that he wants his wife and daughter to know.

Ryan Belleville is not only a BJJ Purple belt but also happens to be one of Canada’s best known comedians and comedic actors. GQ magazine called him “Not just a great Canadian comic, but one of the best around anywhere.” One of the stars of the hit Netflix show Workin Moms, where he plays fan favorite Lionel. GQ magazine called him one of the best comics working today. Multiple Screen Award-nominated actor, Ryan Belleville has been seen on  Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, CBS’s The Late Late Show, and MTV’s Busted, and he has made countless appearances at the Just for Laughs Festival, CBC’s Halifax Comedy Festival, and The Winnipeg Comedy Festival and is also a regular on CBC’s The Debaters. He has performed all over the globe from the Sydney Opera House to the back of a truck in the desert performing for the troops.

Just some of his notable Film and Television credits include Overlord and the Underwoods, National Lampoons Going the Distance, Disney’s Stuck in the Suburbs, Wynonna Earp, Murdoch Mysteries, The LA Complex, Satisfaction, Almost Heroes, Step Dogs and the award-winning family film Finn on the Fly.

Dave Greten is a 4-stripe BJJ blue belt, one of the most beloved training partners at our local academy. Dave's life was changed forever when his brother passed away due to suicide. Despite such a difficult loss, Dave has managed to carry himself with grace and strength. He has chosen to use his experience to help others and often speaks openly about the tragedy in order to help those in similar situations. Today, Dave is sharing his story and bringing attention to the issue of suicide.

On Christmas Eve 2007, whilst serving on operations in Afghanistan with 40 Commando Royal Marines, he was blown up by an Improvised Explosive Device, resulting in the traumatic amputation of both legs and his right arm and was twice pronounced dead.

Mark made a remarkable recovery and became the first triple amputee to survive on the battlefield. Having been told he would never walk again, he nevertheless marched onto parade on his new prosthetic limbs to be awarded his Operational Service Medal in the presence of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, just 14 weeks after incurring his injuries.

A remarkable physical, psychological and emotional achievement.

He remained in the Royal Marines for the next three years, working through his recovery pathway. He went on to work for the RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, successfully launching its new shop, before becoming a highly valued part of the Charity’s Membership team and establishing for it an enviable social media presence.

Mark never utters a single negative comment about his condition and continues to challenge himself – amongst a whole host of remarkable achievements, he continues to take part in numerous endurance challenges to raise awareness for wounded veterans, and has won numerous medals at the Invictus Games.

Mark has motivated thousands of Royal Marines, and tens of thousands of others, to be all that they can be. Through drive, motivation and positivity he has achieved his goals.

Raised in Boise, Idaho, Heather started traveling at 19 and put on a gi for the first time during a trip to Brazil nearly 11 years ago. Since that day, Heather has traveled and trained all over the globe, eventually earning her blackbelt from the legend Andre Galvao and the renowned Atos Academy, one of the top competition teams in the world! In addition to her Atos team, Heather has also trained with notable jiu-jitsu luminaries in many other countries, making her style unique. Mixing old-school pressure with modern technique.

Heather is not only a credentialed competitor, with titles such as Abu Dhabi Grand slam, No Gi Worlds, Numerous f2W titles all through her belt levels, and Master Worlds at Black belt. Showing that her skill and training not only have been tested at the highest levels but also a top-notch coach whose passion for jiu-jitsu inspires and motivates her students!
