    Psalm Chapter 79
A psalm of Asaph. O God, heathens have entered Your domain, defiled Your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins.
They have left Your servants’ corpses as food for the fowl of heaven, and the flesh of Your faithful for the wild beasts.
Their blood was shed like water around Jerusalem, with none to bury them.
We have become the butt of our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
How long, O LORD, will You be angry forever, will Your indignation blaze like fire?
Pour out Your fury on the nations that do not know You, upon the kingdoms that do not invoke Your name,
for they have devoured Jacob and desolated his home.
Do not hold our former iniquities against us; let Your compassion come swiftly toward us, for we have sunk very low.
Help us, O God, our deliverer, for the sake of the glory of Your name. Save us and forgive our sin, for the sake of Your name.
Let the nations not say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes let it be known among the nations that You avenge the spilled blood of Your servants.
Let the groans of the prisoners reach You; reprieve those condemned to death, as befits Your great strength.
Pay back our neighbors sevenfold for the abuse they have flung at You, O Lord.
Then we, Your people, the flock You shepherd, shall glorify You forever; for all time we shall tell Your praises.

  • Tehilim Perek 78
    Tehilim Perek 79
Welcome to NachDaily, covering the entire TANACH one perek at a time. I’m Rabbi Shaya Sussman, and today we’ll be discussing Tehilim, Chapter 79.
This perek is primarily about the destruction of Yerushalyim. Asaph said it, with divine insight, as a lament over the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash.
All of the Meforshim ask why this is called a mizmor, song, as it really should be considered a kina, lament?
The Midrash Socher Tov answers with the following parable: A king became angry at his son, the prince, and wanted to kill him. Instead, the king banished his son from the palace and destroyed all of the prince’s possessions. The king knew that he could always rebuild his son’s quarters and replace his possessions.
So too, instead of destroying Am Yisrael, Hashem took out His wrath on sticks and stones. The perek opens with mizmor l’Asaph, Asaph’s song, because Hashem poured his anger out on sticks and stones and didn’t destroy His children.
We each need to take to heart God’s amazing love for every member of the Jewish nation.
Asaph begins by describing what the destruction looks like. Yerushalyim has been turned into heaps of rubble. Corpses have become food for animals. Blood is flowing in the streets. We’ve become a disgrace.
Asaph now asks God how long we will suffer. Why does He allow us to be devoured by our enemies?
Asaph pleads with Hashem not to hold our sins against us, asking Him to rescue us and lift us up from degradation.
The perek ends with a prayer for Hashem to repay those who harmed His nation. Then Am Yisrael will truly be able to recognize and serve God with no hindrances.
    Verse 1 says:
A psalm of Asaph. O God, heathens have entered Your land, defiled Your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins.
The Gemara in Sanhedrin 96B explains that at the moment the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed, a heavenly voice came down saying that burning the sanctuary is like grinding flour that was already ground.
The Ba’al ShemTov explains the deeper meaning. The heavenly voice was essentially saying that, if not for the p’nemius, hidden part of the sanctuary being ruined, the revealed part of the sanctuary would have never been destroyed. In other words, what the Beis Hamikdash spiritually represented was already gone. Its physical destruction, therefore, was only a manifestation of its spiritual representation.
The Ba’al ShemTov goes on to explain that the Heichel, Sanctuary, represents the heart of a Jew and Yerushalyim represents yiras Shamayim, fear of Heaven. The heart of every Jew needs to be filled with yiras Shamayim.
Therefore, in a way, if we want to rebuild the Beis Hamikdash, we need to internalize our connection with Hashem by bringing Him into the innermost chambers of our hearts. We need to place Him on our hearts for everything we do.
May we merit proper fear of, and faith in, God, which in return will further the rebuilding of Yerushalayim and the ultimate building of the third Beis Hamikdash.
Thank you for listening, and have a wonderful day.

At Your blast, O God of Jacob, horse and chariot lay stunned.

For the leader; al tashḥeth. A psalm of Asaph, a song.
We praise You, O God; we praise You; Your presence is near; men tell of Your wondrous deeds.

To wanton men I say, ‘Do not be wanton!’ to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns!’”
Do not lift your horns up high in vainglorious bluster.
    For what lifts a man comes not from the east or the west or the wilderness;
for God it is who gives judgment; He brings down one man, He lifts up another.
There is a cup in the LORD’s hand with foaming wine fully mixed; from this He pours; all the wicked of the earth drink, draining it to the very dregs.
As for me, I will declare forever, I will sing a hymn to the God of Jacob.

Remember the community You made Yours long ago, Your very own tribe that You redeemed, Mount Zion, where You dwell.

They resolved, “Let us destroy them altogether!” They burned all God’s tabernacles in the land.

    it was You who released springs and torrents, who made mighty rivers run dry;

  • Shavuos Special: The Beauty of the Bride
    Shavuos Special:
Welcome to NachDaily, Im Rabbi Shaya Sussman. Today I wanted to discuss the upcoming holiday of Shavuos, the day the Torah was given.
Rebbe Nachman gives us, in Sichos Haran 91, an amazing lesson on Jewish unity and our relationship with the Torah.
He begins by explaining that if we want to learn b’hasmada, with diligence, we need to be very careful not to speak badly about any Jew.
There are six hundred thousand letters in the Torah which correspond to the six hundred thousand neshmos Yisrael, Jewish souls. Every Jew is represented by a letter in the Torah.
When you speak badly about another Jew, therefore, it’s as if you’re detracting from the letters of the Torah, finding blemishes in it.
We also know that Har Sinai was considered like our wedding day. All of Am Yisrael was k’ish echad beleiv echad, one nation with one heart, completely unified. We saw every member of the Jewish people as true brothers.
Torah tsiva lanu Moshe, morasha kehilas Yaakov - Moshe commanded us the Torah as an inheritance, or legacy. The Gemarah explains that we read the word morasha, as inheritance, and morasa, as betrothal or engagement. The Torah is considered the bride and Am Yisrael is considered the groom.
As every Jew is represented by a letter in the Torah, finding imperfections in other Jews is diminishing the beauty of the bride.
The word Yisrael is an acronym for Yeish Shishim Rebuy Oseyos LaTorah, there are six hundred thousand letters in the Torah because the Torah and the Jewish nation have the deepest of connections.
Rebbe Nachman goes on to explain that when we love Jews, we love the Torah. The concepts go hand in hand because Am Yisrael and the Torah are inextricably bound to each other.
In this context we can understand what is meant by Toras Hashem temima, the Torah of Hashem is perfectly complete and whole. When we find the good in all Jews by judging them favorably and searching out the good in them, then the Torah is completely perfect. The bride being completely perfect in the grooms’ eyes causes a person increased love and desire to learn Torah with diligence.
May we merit loving every Jew with all our hearts and thus be able to taste the sweetness of Torah on our lips.
Thank you for listening, and have a wonderful day.

A psalm of Asaph. God is truly good to Israel, to those whose heart is pure.
As for me, my feet had almost strayed, my steps were nearly led off course,
for I envied the wanton; I saw the wicked at ease.
Death has no pangs for them; their body is healthy.
They have no part in the travail of men; they are not afflicted like the rest of mankind.
So pride adorns their necks, lawlessness enwraps them as a mantle.
Fat shuts out their eyes; their fancies are extravagant.
They scoff and plan evil; from their eminence they plan wrongdoing.
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues range over the earth.
So they pound His people again and again, until they are drained of their very last tear.
Then they say, “How could God know? Is there knowledge with the Most High?”
Such are the wicked; ever tranquil, they amass wealth.
It was for nothing that I kept my heart pure and washed my hands in innocence,
seeing that I have been constantly afflicted, that each morning brings new punishments.
Had I decided to say these things, I should have been false to the circle of Your disciples.
So I applied myself to understand this, but it seemed a hopeless task
till I entered God’s sanctuary and reflected on their fate.
You surround them with flattery; You make them fall through blandishments.
How suddenly are they ruined, wholly swept away by terrors.
When You are aroused You despise their image, as one does a dream after waking, O Lord.
My mind was stripped of its reason, my feelings were numbed.
I was a dolt, without knowledge; I was brutish toward You.
    וַאֲנִ֣י תָמִ֣יד עִמָּ֑ךְ אָ֝חַ֗זְתָּ בְּיַד־יְמִינִֽי׃
    Yet I was always with You, You held my right hand;
    בַּעֲצָתְךָ֥ תַנְחֵ֑נִי וְ֝אַחַ֗ר כָּב֥וֹד תִּקָּחֵֽנִי׃
You guided me by Your counsel and led me toward honor.
Whom else have I in heaven? And having You, I want no one on earth.
My body and mind fail; but God is the stay of my mind, my portion forever.
Those who keep far from You perish; You annihilate all who are untrue to You.
As for me, nearness to God is good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may recount all Your works.
