The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a UN specialized agency that works to ensure the safety, security, and environmental impact of shipping related issues. With the rise of the importance of mental health for seafarers, the IMO and its member states have taken up their responsibilities to protect the psychological safety of seafarers in various ways, such as supporting the flag state, port state and IFT. 
 
If elected, Nancy Karigithu would be the first female, African candidate to be elected for the secretary General role for the IMO.
