Unpacking You're Dating a Narcissist: Rom-Com, Red Flags, and Real-Life Healing
Vanessa Reiser introduces her podcast on narcissistic abuse and, with co-host Dave, unpacks her prior interview with Anne Marie Allison, producer of the film You're Dating a Narcissist. They discuss the challenge of portraying narcissistic abuse as a rom-com while still honoring its darkness, and highlight how survivors can be trauma bonded and unable to leave due to finances, children, or culture. Vanessa shares a "hard way or hard way" framework about leaving, and they explore coercive sexual boundary-pushing as control rather than pleasure. They also cover public misconceptions about narcissism, the risks of couples therapy with abusers (including charm and therapist manipulation), and how narcissists can ruin holidays, isolate partners, and appear beloved in communities. The episode ends with a call to watch the film, build awareness, and seek support and resources.

Narcissistic Abuse with Vanessa Reiser
EPISODE SUMMARYIn this episode of Narcissistic Abuse with Vanessa Reiser, Vanessa and co-host Dave revisit their conversation with Evan Rachel Wood, reflecting on her account of grooming, manipulation, and psychological abuse during her relationship with Marilyn Manson. Manson has denied allegations of abuse.
Vanessa and Dave examine the behaviors Evan described, with particular attention to the calculated, forward-thinking nature of grooming. They discuss how manipulation can unfold over time, how a younger person's inexperience can be exploited, and why understanding the pattern matters more than evaluating each incident in isolation.
A line discussed in the episode captures the conversation's focus on vulnerability and exploitation:
"They don't trade you for somebody better. They trade you for somebody who doesn't know any better."
The discussion explores what this means in the context of grooming, shifting attention away from a survivor's perceived shortcomings and toward the behavior of the person exploiting them.
Vanessa and Dave also reflect on the idea that "the mask is the same underneath," considering how apparent honesty, selective vulnerability, and even moments of revealing harmful intentions can become part of a manipulative relationship. They discuss the difference between what someone presents publicly and what a partner experiences privately, including why friends, family members, and others may struggle to recognize the abuse being described.
The conversation addresses the severity of psychological harm, including Evan's descriptions of desensitization and exposure to disturbing material. Vanessa and Dave consider how these experiences can affect a survivor's ability to trust their own perceptions and explain what happened to other people.
They also examine a difficult question that comes up repeatedly in this work: What happens when the hope that someone will change becomes the reason a survivor keeps waiting? Vanessa and Dave discuss the risks of organizing one's safety and future around the possibility of an exception, rather than attending to the behavior occurring in the present.
For clinicians, the episode raises questions about recognition, accountability, and education. Vanessa reflects on the tendency to make concessions for harmful behavior and the importance of helping professionals understand narcissistic abuse and coercive control rather than minimizing a survivor's experience.
The conversation also expands beyond intimate relationships. Vanessa and Dave discuss political messaging, family influence, group loyalty, and accountability, including their comparisons between coercive relationship dynamics and larger systems of influence. These segments include discussion of Turning Point USA, youth political engagement, and the midterm elections.
A central theme throughout the episode is the impact of speaking out. Vanessa and Dave reflect on the courage involved in Evan's public advocacy, the risks that can accompany disclosure, and their belief that survivors, clinicians, and educators can help others recognize experiences they previously struggled to name. The discussion considers both the potential value and the personal costs of telling one's story publicly.
The episode closes with practical discussion of journaling, preserving messages, taking screenshots, and using documentation to reconnect with observable events when gaslighting creates doubt. These approaches can help some survivors validate their experiences, but documentation should always be considered alongside safety and privacy. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers guidance on documenting abuse and storing information safely.
At its heart, this conversation is about recognizing harmful patterns, taking psychological abuse seriously, and supporting survivors as they reclaim their sense of reality.

Narcissistic Abuse with Vanessa Reiser: Evan Rachel Wood on Grooming, Coercive Control, Family Court, and Reclaiming Your Voice
Content Warning and Disclaimer: This episode contains discussion of alleged domestic violence, coercive control, grooming, sexual and physical abuse, substance use, trauma, PTSD, dissociation, and family court conflict. Some material may be distressing or triggering for listeners.
This episode reflects the personal experiences, recollections, allegations, and opinions of the individuals speaking. Allegations discussed in this episode should not be interpreted as findings of fact or determinations of guilt. Brian Warner, professionally known as Marilyn Manson, has denied allegations of abuse made against him. Nothing in this podcast constitutes legal, medical, or mental health advice, and discussion of psychological concepts is for educational purposes and should not be interpreted as a clinical diagnosis of any person discussed.
In this powerful episode of Narcissistic Abuse with Vanessa Reiser, psychotherapist and author Vanessa Reiser sits down with actor, musician, and activist Evan Rachel Wood for an in-depth conversation about grooming, coercive control, trauma, survival, advocacy, and what it can take to reclaim your voice after abuse.
Wood discusses the abuse she has publicly alleged experiencing after meeting musician Brian Warner, known professionally as Marilyn Manson, when she was 18. She describes her recollections of grooming, isolation, psychological manipulation, escalating control, and alleged physical and sexual abuse. She also explores something survivors frequently struggle to understand: why recognizing a pattern of coercive control can be extraordinarily difficult while you are still living inside it.
Wood and Reiser examine how abusive dynamics can develop incrementally. Their conversation explores isolation, manipulation through manufactured crises, intimidation, sleep and food disruption, temperature and environmental control, triangulation, threats, fear, intermittent reinforcement, and the erosion of a person's ability to trust their own perceptions.
They also discuss trauma bonding and why leaving an abusive relationship is rarely as simple as "just leave." The conversation examines how fear, attachment, destabilization, substances, dissociation, and repeated cycles of distress and relief can affect a survivor's decision-making and nervous system.
Wood describes how connecting with other women who made allegations involving Warner helped validate aspects of her own experience and gave her a new framework for understanding what had happened to her. She discusses the complicated process of speaking publicly, including her advocacy surrounding California's Phoenix Act, legislation that extended the statute of limitations for certain domestic violence offenses.
The episode also turns to family court and post-separation abuse, including Wood's perspective on how legal proceedings can become another arena for conflict, intimidation, and control. Reiser and Wood discuss allegations of abuse by proxy, mobilizing followers or third parties, legal intimidation, and the ways survivors may continue to experience fear and destabilization long after physically leaving a relationship.
Throughout the conversation, Wood reflects on rebuilding self-trust and learning to listen to intuition again. She discusses PTSD, dissociation, anger, survival responses, and the gradual process of helping the nervous system recognize that danger is no longer constant.
The conversation ultimately moves beyond what happened to Wood and toward what she has chosen to do with her voice. She discusses advocacy, survival, creativity, and the freedom she found in telling her own story. For Wood, speaking publicly became part of reclaiming something that abuse had attempted to take from her: ownership of her own reality.
Wood also shares what she is working on now, including her music project Lenore Pink, acting work, and her participation in projects examining abuse and coercive control, including Phoenix Rising and The Narcissist's Playbook.
This is a conversation about what abuse can look like before we have language for it, why intelligent and accomplished people can become trapped in coercively controlling relationships, what happens when a survivor begins connecting the dots, and what it can mean to finally say: I believe myself.
Please note: Discussion of narcissism, narcissistic abuse, grooming, coercive control, trauma bonding, and related psychological concepts in this episode is intended for education and discussion. These terms should not be understood as diagnoses of any individual unless a diagnosis has been established by an appropriately qualified professional with sufficient clinical information. Vanessa Reiser is participating as a psychotherapist, educator, author, and podcast host, not as a treating clinician or forensic evaluator of the individuals discussed.

EPISODE SUMMARY In this powerful solo episode, the speaker marks six years since leaving an abusive "cult of one" relationship. They share raw memories of being spit on, having clothing bleached, and receiving threats, while crediting a friend named Natalie for witnessing the abuse and helping validate reality during intense self-gaslighting. The episode offers practical advice such as recording conversations with abusive people to counter "word salad" and circular manipulation. It also explores symbolic and therapeutic outlets for healing, including running in a wedding dress to reject cultural fantasy narratives and throwing plates with names off a cliff to release anger. The speaker discusses extreme harassment by an ex, prioritizing their child's safety by encouraging him to stay with his stable father, and explains how narcissists quickly replace partners β often targeting those who "don't know any better" or viewing strong people as "sport." The episode emphasizes that the abuse is never about the victim and encourages becoming "ungroomable" through strong boundaries, stable finances, supportive friends, hobbies, and a solid career. Healing is framed as rebellion, and peace as revolution.

From Coercive Control to Justice: A Survivor's Story and Warning Signs Narcissistic Abuse with Vanessa Reiser
EPISODE SUMMARY In this powerful survivor story, a woman shares her harrowing experience of coercive control and abuse that began in 2015 when, at age 26, she entered a fast-moving relationship with a 49-year-old man. What started with intense love bombing and future-faking quickly escalated into severe control over her clothing, finances, car access, and identity, followed by physical and psychological abuse, self-harm, and a suicide attempt. With help from a friend, she fled to Australia, later trained as a counselor, became a certified narcissistic abuse specialist, and returned to the UK. In 2022, her abuser was sentenced to 19 months in prison for coercive control and given a restraining order. She kept extensive evidence, including threats. She now emphasizes the importance of believing victims, the real danger of leaving, and issues a strong warning about strangulation; often minimized online; as a major red flag and precursor to femicide. Her abuser was later convicted again for non-fatal strangulation with another victim.
