This week, Adam's longtime friend, Jon Switzer visited us at Narrate!

Adam says this of Jon:

"I first met Jon when he was a senior in high school and I was 20 years old. At the time, I had no idea that we would spend nearly a decade serving together on a church staff.

Jon started the middle school ministry at Harvest, and later I started the high school ministry. He was always the cool, fun, hilarious leader, while I was the serious, nerdy one.

Today, Jon owns a nursery and landscaping company in Billings, and he continues to teach the Bible regularly. I love the guy, and I think you will too.

Jon has also recently released a book, Hands Were Made for Working. It’s available on Amazon, and we’ll have copies available at church. The book is a unique blend of what he has learned as a landscaper and small business owner, combined with thoughtful, practical Bible teaching. I really enjoyed reading it.

No sooner does Jesus call people to humbly serve than he warns them that reality may not match their expectations. Motivated by genuine love, eager to be kind and peace-loving, they should anticipate disappointment—if not outright persecution. While he says little about their impending successes, Jesus is candid about their looming struggles.

It reads as both a fair warning and a vital reminder: “I signed up to be faithful, not to guarantee certain results.” Perhaps all who set out to serve—to lay down their lives for the sake of others—would do well to revisit Jesus’ honest caution. There will be difficult times. There will be times when our efforts are misunderstood, when the good we hope to do is received not as kindness, but as the embodiment of evil.

Matthew 9v35-10:15

When Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few; pray therefore that God would send workers into his harvest,” he is offering one of the few explicit instructions on prayer in the Gospels. Here, the prayer is for good, benevolent, Jesus-following people who will care for those in their immediate context—and trust that the larger picture ultimately belongs to God. What' your context and what does faithfulness look like?

One of the greatest gifts we can ever give another is curiosity - real, genuine, and time-consuming curiosity. Perhaps the call of Matthew puts this on display. Jesus could have summoned him coldly, without context. Instead, his invitation suggests that he truly knew Matthew; because he saw him he could invite him into a new purpose. In what ways is God calling you to practice localized, humble curiosity?
