Long road trips as a kid, trapped in the back seat, we’ve all been there. Staring out the window, imagining a world far more interesting than the painfully normal destinations in which we will arrive. We grow older, and far more curious. We venture forth out onto the open road in the middle of the night. There, in the transient nature of the unknown, we meet strangers that tell us of strange worlds we’ll never tread. What would happen, if you didn’t come across anyone in the middle of the night, on your travels? No one, not a single soul.

Our story begins with the turn of a key, an open road under a starry Texas night, and not a soul to be found.

Imagine waking up one day and realizing most of your life you’ve spent asleep. You went to school and pretended to be someone else. You graduated and went to college, and pretended to be someone else. You found someone, you married, and pretended to be someone else. You had a child, they grew, and you pretended to be someone else. Imagine one day, you wake up, and you can’t pretend anymore.

So many years we spend consumed by others, we can forget that we even exist in the first place. When true happiness escapes us entirely, what are we left with but a false sense of self wrapped up in personas. Life is not a fairytale but our story begins on top of a tower overlooking a kingdom made of falsehoods. Where everyone can be anyone, but rarely honest with themselves.

Love conquers all. That's not true. Love cannot conquer the space between youthful aspirations and aging resentment. Nor can love conquer the regret of a fearful heart, or the restless nights that find the listless poet scribbling yearnings for a love that has casually sauntered from their verse. Love cannot conquer the tempestuous nature of the open sea...or can it?
