NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day episodes

  • 2023 May 25 - Cat's Eye Wide and Deep

In today's image, we see the Cat's Eye Nebula, an example of a planetary nebula which is the end state of a star much like our own Sun. In this deep image, we see outer layers that were expelled outward before the more commonly recognized part of the nebula was formed.

  • 2023 May 24 - Observatory Aligned with Moon Occulting Jupiter

In today's image, we see Lick Observatory, where the moon Amalthea was discovered visually (just by looking through the telescope, not using any photographic means.) This was the last moon in the solar system to be detected without the aid of photography. We also see our Moon as it has just moved from in front of Jupiter as the occultation which occurred earlier this month ended.

  • 2023 May 23 - Jupiter Swirls from Juno

In today's image, we see swirling clouds in the atmosphere of Jupiter as imaged by the Juno spacecraft back in August of 2020. Studies of storms in Jupiter's atmosphere can give us a betting insight into storms that occur here on Earth.

  • 2023 May 22 - Supernova in Nearby Spiral Galaxy M101

In today's image, we seethe supernova recently discovered in the spiral galaxy M101. This is an example of a Type II supernova which occurs at the end of the life of a massive star. Being able to study one that occurs nearby allows us to better study and improve our models of how such supernovae occur.

  • 2023 May 21 - Tardigrade in Moss

In today's image, we see an animal known as a tardigrade which is an example of an extremophile which can exist under conditions that would kill a human or most other life forms. These can survive decades with no food or water and can even survive for an extended time in the vacuum of space.

  • 2023 May 20 - Galileo's Europa

In today's image, we see an image of one of the large moons of Jupiter known as Europa. This moon is interesting because it is known to have a vast subsurface ocean which leads us to consider the possibility that some type of simple life may have been able to evolve far below the surface here.

  • 2023 May 19 - Curly Spiral Galaxy M63

In today's image, we see the spiral galaxy known as M63. In this very deep exposure, we can see total streams around the galaxy where it is in the process of cannibalizing the smaller galaxies that once orbited it.

  • 2023 May 18 - WR 134 Ring Nebula

In today's image, we see the nebula around a Wolf-Rayet star. This is a hot, massive star of the type that will eventually end its life as a supernova. At this point, we see layers of material from the star that have been expelled due to the extremely strong stellar winds of this star.

  • 2023 May 17 - Sunspot with Light Bridge

In today's image, we see a sunspot on the surface of our Sun. this is a cooler region on the solar surface where the energy flow has been inhibited by the strong magnetic field around the sunspot. We also see a brighter bridge of material that has been raised up above the sunspot and granulation on the solar surface.

  • 2023 May 16 - Total Eclipse: The Big Corona

In today's image, we see the total solar eclipse of April 2023 which was visible in parts of Australia. Here we see the Moon completely blocking out the Sun's surface allowing us to see the much fainter corona (outer atmosphere) of the Sun.
