  • 2023 February 25 - Crescent Moon Occultation

In today's image, we see the crescent Moon near to the time of an occultation of Jupiter. An occultation occurs when one astronomical object passes directly in front of another one. This coming week we will also see a conjunction of Jupiter and Venus. A conjunction occurs when two astronomical objects are seen close together in the sky.

  • 2023 February 24 - Jones-Emberson 1

In today's image, we see the planetary nebula known as Jones-Emberson 1. A planetary nebula will be the end state of a star much like our own Sun. The outer layers are expelled out into space as the nebula and the central core collapses down to a super-dense star known as a white dwarf.

  • 2023 February 23 - Arp 78: Peculiar Galaxy in Aries

In today's image, we see Arp 78 which is an example of a peculiar galaxy. A peculiar galaxy is a galaxy generally with a distorted structure because of interactions with other nearby galaxies. Generally, we are catching this in the process of a collision and they would settle down to look like an ordinary galaxy in a few hundred million years or so.

  • 2023 February 22 - Our Increasingly Active Sun

In today's image, we see an image of our Sun taken in the light of hydrogen. The Sun is coming out of a solar minimum of activity just a couple of years ago where few sunspots or other signs of activity were visible. It is expected that the Sun will become more active over the coming years and we will see more prominences and solar flares.

  • 2023 February 21 - Comet ZTF over Yosemite Falls

In today's image, we see comet ZTF at near its closest approach to Earth earlier this month as seen over Yosemite Falls in California, USA. The comet is now heading back to the outer solar system, perhaps never to return.

  • 2023 February 20 - NGC 1850: Not Found in the Milky Way

In today's image, we see NGC 1850, a star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud which is a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. It bears a resemblance to the globular clusters in our galaxy, but is far younger. No clusters like this have ever been noted within our Milky Way galaxy.

  • 2023 February 19 - Seven Dusty Sisters in Infrared

In today's image, we see an infrared view of the Pleiades star cluster. In the infrared, the dust around the cluster is emphasized, giving us an opportunity to study the structures that are formed in the dust by the stars of the cluster.

  • 2023 February 18 - Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1365 from Webb

In today's image, we see NGC 1365 which is an example of a barred spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way. This is imaged from the James Webb Space Telescope which gives us a view of it in the infrared part of the spectrum. The longer wavelength IR light is better able to penetrate through dust in the galaxy giving us a better look into and a better understanding of these galaxies.

  • 2023 February 17 - 2023 CX1 Meteor Flash

In today's image, we see the flash of the meteor created by the object known as 2023 CX1. This is a very rare case where the object was detected before it actually hit Earth's atmosphere. In this case, seven hours in advance. While not much of a warning, it was time for the photographer to be able to get this image.

  • 2023 February 16 - The Hydra Cluster of Galaxies

In today's image, we see one of the nearer clusters of galaxies known as the Hydra cluster. Galaxies tend to group in to large structures like clusters, then superclusters, and finally great filaments. This leaves much of the universe as relatively empty voids.
