Native Calgarian

Today I spend some time talking about energy extraction such as Alberta farmers with contaminated land, the documentary Gasland which focuses communities where fracking is a concern, and the pipeline routing choices that were made on Wet’suwet’en territory.  I also talk about recent developments in the Amber Tuccaro investigation.  I also took part in a Twitch live stream thanks to twitch.tv/lottieblix and was chatting with some great people such as Ian Campeau (DJ NDN) one of the founders of A Tribe Called Red.  Ian gave me a whole new perspective on the genocide of Indigenous that I hadn't thought of before but now make so much sense.

I was part of a rally in Calgary to show support and solidarity for the Wet’suwet’en Nation and the violence they faced last year at this time and the violence they continue to face by the RCMP and by the Canadian Government and stakeholders of the Coastal GasLink pipeline.  I also relate some of my most recent experiences with our health care system, and a social event I was at trying to enjoy some food and conversations when racism and privilege just had to show up.

Welcome to 2020. 2019 ended with some great things such as baby Yoda and the Rise of Skywalker, but 2020 is back to business as usual with racism in a lecture, and no support for a professer speaking out against racism. Also seeing that lateral violence is still a thing in 2020. 1 year later still have more news coming out of the Wet'suwet'en/Unist'ot'en camp.

I am joined by an amazing young Indigenous woman, Karly Cywink.  We talk about a video she was part of called Am I Indian Enough.  I enjoyed our conversation about identity and safe spaces for Indigenous people.  It is amazing to see the younger generations of Indigenous finding their voices, healing, and becoming such strong Indigenous people.

I had the pleasure of heading off to see Frozen 2 with one of my favourite people in the world, and she joins me today on the show as my special guest.  We talk about the movie, politics, and an incredibly amazing project my guest is part of.

Sable Sweetgrass from the Kainai Nation is a short story writer, playwright and filmmaker, and educator.  Sable's writing has touched on important issues such as residential schools, colonialism, transgender and 2 Spirit perspectives and the loss and recovery of traditional ways.
