In Helmand Province, Afghanistan, police have taken a significant step towards regional autonomy by unveiling a police training facility. The Lashkar Gah Training Centre (LTC), opened by the British in 2009, will now see Afghan police trainers teach a variety of courses as they look to take on one of the biggest challenges in Afghanistan – policing Helmand. As Afghan pilot instructors graduate from Shindand air base in western Afghanistan and Afghan-only flight crews embark on active missions across the nation, the Afghan air force is once again developing into an important part of the Afghan security forces. In the early 1980s Afghanistan had a strong and capable air force. But in the civil war all that changed. Over the past 12 years, Kabul’s fire department has grown from just two operating fire engines to a fully functional fire service. Between March and July there were 56 fires in Kabul alone. These are some of the men who put them out. Also available in high definition.

The Applied Physics Science and Technology Centre (APSTEC) in St. Petersburg, Russia has been working with NATO to develop a technology to detect explosives concealed on suicide bombers in mass transport locations. Eighteen scientists and engineers are working on this project for the “Stand-Off Detection of Explosives”, known as STANDEX. This version includes graphics and voiceover.

A series of air, land and maritime exercises are taking place this fall to prepare next year’s NATO Response Force. During the air exercise Brilliant Arrow in Norway, 800 personnel from nine air forces trained to NATO standards putting their interoperability to the test. The Peace Music Festival took place in Kabul, as musicians from Afghanistan, India and Pakistan came to the famous Babur Gardens to play for a large crowd, while many more watched on television across the country. In 2006, the NATO-Russia Council nations launched a counter-narcotics training project. The aim: to improve the skills of counter-narcotics officers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia. In September 2013, the North-West Institute of Advanced Studies of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service in St Petersburg hosted some 20 Afghan police officers. Also available in high definition

At a ceremony in Uruzgan Province in Afghanistan, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and leader of the opposition Bill Shorten announced the closure of the Australian-led provincial reconstruction team or PRT in Uruzgan, marking an important milestone in the Australian mission in Afghanistan. Last June, the stand-off detection of explosives (STANDEX) project, which is being developed in the NATO-Russia cooperation framework, was tested in the underground railway of a European capital. This innovative system combines three different detection technologies into a data merging and tracking system, and may help NATO countries and Russia to counter terrorist attacks more effectively.
