  • How Does NATO Rapidly Deploy Troops?
In the event of a crisis, NATO must quickly assemble and deploy forces to defend its Allies by whatever means necessary – land, sea or air. But pulling off this logistical feat requires practice. NATO Allies conduct a wide range of exercises to test their ability to rapidly deploy troops directly into combat. This year, US Marines and Romanian naval infantry deployed from the Baltic Sea as part of Exercise Baltic Operations 18; US and Polish airborne troops hit the battlefield as part of Exercise Swift Response 18; and US and German Army engineers constructed bridges to cross rivers during Exercise Saber Strike 18. The exercises took place in Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Romania. Footage includes amphibious assaults, airborne operations, ribbon bridge construction, and an interview with US Navy Captain Brian Finman.

  • NATO’s Role in Preventing Conflict-Related Sexual and Gender Based Violence
NATO and its partners are taking action to promote the role of women in peace and security. Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is often used as a weapon of war and can undermine NATO’s operations, but also conflict resolution and long-term recovery.
Since 2015, NATO has military guidelines that recognise and act upon the need to prevent and respond to conflict-related SGBV.
A recent workshop in Brussels brought together NATO personnel, international and field subject-matter experts, representatives of the United Nations, the European Union, the International Committee of the Red Cross and civil society to discuss and evaluate the progress made by NATO in implementing the NATO Military Guidelines on the prevention of, and response to, conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence as well as the work that still lies ahead.
Footage includes interviews with Clare Hutchinson, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, and NATO Gender Advisor Maj Stephanie Nicol, as well as b-roll from NATO’s workshop on military guidelines on the prevention of, and response to, conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence.

  • How NATO forges the cyber defenders of tomorrow - Master
The cyber defenders of tomorrow need more than technical know-how to defend NATO’s networks. See how the Alliance helps forge their skills.
Being a good cyber defender means more than possessing the technical expertise – it means being a good communicator, and being capable of devising effective policies to address to rapidly developing crises. As the cyber threat grows in size and complexity, NATO needs these experts more than ever. NATO’s Deputy Head of Cyber Defence, Chelsey Slack, recently helped judge the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, co-hosted by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and the Atlantic Council in Geneva, Switzerland. In this video, Slack explains why encouraging and cultivating well-rounded cyber defenders today is necessary for protecting the Alliance’s networks in the future. Footage includes scenes of students competing in the challenge, interviews with contestants and an interview with Chelsey Slack.

  • Mali, The Hero Dog
Mali is a Belgian malinois dog who was part of a British military unit deployed to Afghanistan to work alongside NATO troops in 2012. During one operation in Kabul, Mali helped secure a multi-story building that had been taken over by hostile forces. He conducted searches for explosives while under direct fire. He sustained serious injuries from the attack but had saved many lives. Mali went on to receive the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin Medal in recognition for his bravery – the animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award of the British honours system. The footage includes archive shots of the attack in Kabul as well as Mali at his new home in England.

  • Meet NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force
In the event of a crisis, NATO turns to its Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), a rapidly deployable, multinational force capable of quickly bringing air, land, maritime and Special Operations forces to bear. This video features the German Army’s 9th Armoured Brigade, which will lead the VJTF in 2019, and Norway’s Telemark Battalion, which will also participate in the VJTF starting next year. The United Kingdom currently leads the VJTF, which is staffed by Allies on a rotational basis. Shots: German armour crossing a river via ferry; Norwegian troops engaging in close-quarters urban combat. Soundbites from Brigadier General Ulrich Spannuth, who will lead the VJTF’s land component in 2019, and Norwegian Capt. Brage Reinaas.

  • What happens to pilots at high gravitational forces?, Master Version
Find out how it feels to be put through high G-force centrifuge training with Poland’s first female fighter pilot, Lt Katarzyna Tomiak-Siemieniewicz.
For fighter pilots to maintain their composure during aerial combat, they must undergo training at high gravitational forces (G-forces). Aggressive maneuvers at high speed drain the blood from a pilot’s head with centrifugal force – so while they’re tracking their target and flying the aircraft, they’re clinging to consciousness. Poland’s first female fighter pilot, Lt Katarzyna Tomiak-Siemieniewicz, undergoes high G-force centrifuge training at a specialist facility in Poland. Footage includes Lt Tomiak-Siemieniewicz inside a high G-force centrifuge, and an interview about changes she feels at various levels of G-force.
