How do we remain steadfast when life is super challenging?

This is something that I have had personal experience with over the past couple of weeks. While it feels a little strange to talk about heavy things on Naturally High, I feel like it is an important topic to talk about. Because even though I believe there is always a silver lining in life, sometimes we are not able to see it until we are on the other side of our situation. My hope is that this episode will show how debilitating some life events can be for us and what we can do to get through them when they happen.

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing an incredibly special man, Mr. John Giordano.

John has gone through incredible life transformation, from the stigma of childhood sexual abuse, homelessness, and severe addiction, to being a renowned addiction expert with 36 years of sobriety. He started his own holistic treatment center with only $300 which he eventually sold for $45,000,000. Currently he is a published author of 3 books, a program consultant for South Beach Detox, and the Chaplain for the North Miami Police Department. His specialty is holistic mental health and trauma recovery.

John has appeared on many national and local television and radio shows as a respected addiction expert. He has also contributed to over 79 scientific peer-reviewed research papers. Research Gate ranks him as one of the top researchers in the world.

There is a general misconception that we cannot do anything about what we've been given when it comes to our health, especially when it comes to our genetic expression, cancer histories, and alcoholism. All of these things can have a very strong influence on our health but there is evidence now that our health is not fixed; that we can do something about what we've been given. How we live our lives, our life styles, our diets, and our stress levels, can all play a really important role in the expression of our genes. This thought that is at the center of epigenetics will be discussed more deeply in this episode.

In the most simplistic terms an ego is a person's sense of their own self esteem or self-importance. It's the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious, which is our awareness, and the unconscious, which is our subconscious programming. And it's responsible for reality testing and our sense of personal identity.

On this episode we're going to talk about our ego and the consciousness of it and why it's probably a good idea to let it die.

Today on the show we have Darryl Stickel. Darryl talks about a really important subject that is often misunderstood and probably overlooked...trust. Darryl holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and wrote a doctoral thesis on building trust in hostile environments. He has founded his own company Trust Unlimited. Many are talking about trust these days but few actually know what to do about it. He has spent the last 20 years helping individuals and organizations better understand what trust is, how it works, and how to build it.

The importance of trauma-informed care has never been more essential because there has never been more support out there for people in every way imaginable. And the coaching world is regulated so differently than the therapeutic world.

Trauma-informed care really makes sure that coaches (and other organizations) subscribe to certain ethics around their work culture to help people feel safe and protected, to be able to recognize signs and symptoms of trauma within clients, and implement this knowledge to avoid traumatizing people.

This is so important because you can't empower someone if you are dismissing them. Tune in to learn more.
