  • Teaching Sciences in 2016 - Witness
Witness: January 6th Teaching Sciences in 2016 and Beyond
As we roll into 2016 on Witness, I thought it would be fitting to take a look toward the next generation again, and see how they are going to guide us into the environmental and science front into the future.  This time, from the teacher’s perspective.  My two good friends who will be on the show Wednesday night are both teachers in High Schools.  They both are ex-aquarium employees as well, so they have had years of field and laboratory experiences to draw from in the classroom.  These two guests (Not to be named), both have extremely strong environmental ideals, and try to guide the classroom discussions and lessons into hands on learning experiences designed to guide students into critical thinking and good scientific practices.
I am looking forward to getting an honest perspective on how they see their prospective students becoming the future scientists of America.  I’ll be asking some tough questions about lessons, common core, “No child left behind learning”, etc.  I really want to know if these students are prepared to become the future, or if they are going to become the next unprepared voters of America.
Do the kids recycle, how can you teach this?  What’s more important, Grades, test scores or life lessons?  I look back to my own middle and High school years, and the missed opportunities I see now in retrospect.   Will these kids be in the same position when they have kids of their own?

  • Rivulus Mahdiaensis - Killifish Hour
Rivulus Mahdiaensis will be the topic of discussion on Natures Talk Show Killifish Hour.Once dismissed as drab brown fish, rivulus killifish now are known to provide a wealth of vibrant colors and interesting behaviors to their keepers.
Long known only as ugly brown fish with very few fans, today rivulus are gaining supporters throughout the hobby. In fact, some species are among the most distinctive and beautiful killies available. Others lead fascinating lives that we are only just beginning to understand. New species are discovered every year, with international collectors visiting South and Central America and coming home with a wide variety of beautiful and challenging fish. • Plesiosaurs - Fine Art of Paleontology
Plesiosaurs will be the topic of discussion on Natures Talk Show Fine Art of Paleontology Series. The Plesiosauria or plesiosaurs are an order or clade of Mesozoic marine reptiles, belonging to the Sauropterygia. Plesiosaurs first appeared in the latest Triassic Period, possibly in the Rhaetian stage, about 205 million years ago. Plesiosaurs were long-necked marine reptiles, closely related to the Pliosaurs though probably slower in the water. Their swimming speed has been estimated at 8.2km/h, which is faster than an Olympic champion, but too slow to catch a mackerel, salmon or seal. Plesiosaurs are often depicted with their neck bent into sinuous folds. In truth it was not that flexible, and no Plesiosaur ever bent its neck into the tight curve today's swans can manage. Plesiosaurs became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs.

  • Water Lilies - Green Scene
Water Lilies will be the topic of discussion on Natures Talk Shows the Green Scene. How to maintain year round in your ponds or garden areas.Water lilies are a well studied clade of plants because their large flowers with multiple unspecialized parts were initially considered to represent the floral pattern of the earliest flowering plants, and later genetic studies confirmed their evolutionary position as basal angiosperms. Analyses of floral morphology and molecular characteristics and comparisons with a sister taxon, the family Cabombaceae, indicate, however, that the flowers of extant water lilies with the most floral parts are more derived than the genera with fewer floral parts.
