In deze aflevering van onze podcast NDSM X gaan we in gesprek met Afaina de Jong, architect, onderzoeker en oprichter van studio AFARAI. We duiken in Kinship Library, haar nieuwste werk op de NDSM-werf: een architectonische installatie waarin vergeten stemmen en verhalen samenkomen in een levend archief.

Wat betekent een bibliotheek in een tijd van algoritmes? Hoe kunnen we persoonlijke geschiedenissen bewaren als een plek verandert? Afaina deelt haar visie op het belang van onderbelichte perspectieven, het doorgeven van kennis en het oprekken van de grenzen van architectuur.

Welke verhalen maken NDSM tot wat het is? Voor Kinship Library verzamelde het Stratenmakers Audiocollectief – met audiomakers Jesper Buursink en Fouad Lakbir – verhalen van mensen met een band met de werf, van oud-werknemers en arbeidsmigranten tot kunstenaars en pioniers. In deze NDSM X gaan Petra en Ewa in gesprek met Jesper en Fouad over hoe ze door de stad en over NDSM ‘flowen’ op zoek naar onderbelichte stemmen.

De audioverhalen zijn vanaf 16 mei t/m 2 november 2025 te horen in de Kinship Library, een installatie van Afaina de Jong, en online via ndsm.nl.

During her residency at ARCAM (Architecture Center Amsterdam), Afaina de Jong created a series of podcasts exploring feminist theory in relation to architecture and urban space. In this episode, she speaks with Nirmal Puwar, a scholar examining the relationship between people and space. In her book Space Invaders: Race, Gender and Bodies Out of Place (2004), she explores the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion within institutions.

During her residency at ARCAM (Architecture Center Amsterdam), Afaina de Jong created a series of podcasts exploring feminist theory in relation to architecture and urban space. In this episode, she speaks with Brady Burroughs, an architecture educator and writer whose work focuses on power dynamics and spatial inclusivity in architecture. Burroughs is the author of Architectural Flirtations: A Love Storey (2016).
