When people wanted to follow Jesus, he did not shrink back from making it crystal clear that he required that they give the whole of their lives to his service. We have read and considered these words of Jesus many times in church before. Nevertheless we all struggle to practice what Jesus asks of us - and hence miss out on the blessings of living the full life he promises.
If we observe Christians today, including ourselves, I think we could say that even though we want to serve Christ with all our heart and mind and strength, at the end of the day we let this world determine the things we live for. Would that be true of you?
One writer wrote: “In spite of all the talk of Christ"s Lordship, everyone knows that the expectations of modern culture come first. Everyone knows that getting ahead in the job comes first. Getting ahead in the suburbs comes first. Getting the kids to their activities comes first… Most Western Christians unquestionally allow modern culture to arrange the furniture of our lives.” (Tom Sine)
My prayer is that the next 5 weeks will challenge and inspire each of us to a new commitment to our Lord and his kingdom.
