Key Text: Matthew 6:5-15
Matt 6:1 - "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them..."
Just as we saw that we can twist 'generosity' to be all about us rather than the needy, this week we continue the theme as we explore 'prayer'.
Key Text: Matthew 6:1-4
Launching back into our 'Sermon on the Mount' series this week, we'll begin to explore the dangers that come with practicing an 'external' righteousness.
First cab off the rank: How does 'external righteousness' distort a good thing like giving to the needy?
Key Text: Matthew 5:43-48
So, a few weeks ago Steve spoke on 'anger' and in the following week faced a few angry situations - yesterday we had a message on not retaliating and one of our Pastors immediately had his wallet stolen.
This Sunday, our Sermon on the Mount series continues as we consider Jesus' words to love our enemies!
So who's coming to church this week? Should be interesting!
Key Text: Matthew 5:38-42
You only need to try and sort out a childhood argument to know that retaliation runs deep.
And as we reach adulthood, we simply find more sophisticated ways of saying, "He hit me first!" - "She scribbled on my paper first!".
Join us this week as we explore how Jesus describes the 'Greater Righteousness' of the new kingdom, and how it impacts our attitude when somebody starts something that we want to finish!
Key Text: Matthew 5:33-37
We make a lot of promises don't we... but how many of them are we really able to keep? Will swearing on your Mother's grave really enable you to follow through? There are very few things we can control in life.
Join us this Sunday as we continue our 'Sermon on the Mount' series by exploring why Jesus says we should just keep it to a simple "Yes" or "No".
Key Text: Matthew 5:31-32
There is no doubt we live in a broken world; a broken world filled with broken people... and broken relationships, friendships, and marriages.
This week, we continue in our 'Sermon on the Mount' series with an extremely confronting passage. Matthew 5:31-32 attacks our 'consumer relationship' tendencies in such a way that it reveals our selfishness, and leaves us with the realisation that we need someone to rescue us from ourselves.
So as we gather together as broken people, my prayer is that you will not hear condemnation (after all, we're all lustful and adulterous people), instead, you will experience the hope that comes in spite of our brokenness.
A hope that comes in the righteousness of Jesus; a greater righteousness than ours.
Key Text: Matthew 5:27-30
With the pornography industry's estimated worth being close to $97 billion, and the recent movie '50 Shades of Grey' passing $500 million at the box-office, we know that we have a problem with lust!
But what's the big deal? I mean, it can't be that bad can it?
Let's return to our 'Sermon on the Mount' series and see what Jesus has to say to our lustful hearts. It's serious... but there's also hope.
Key Text: Matthew 5:21-26
Following the pattern of "You have heard... but I tell you", Jesus cuts through our outward, superficial displays of righteousness and reveals what we really need; a heart transplant.
Key Text: Matthew 5:17-20
"How good is good enough?"
We've probably all asked this question at some point in time. Maybe you're asking it now?
Join us this Sunday as we explore Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17-20 during the next instalment of our 'Sermon on the Mount' series.
You might be surprised by Jesus' answer...
Key Text: Matthew 5:13-16
As we continue our 'Sermon on the Mount' series, this week we'll be exploring the mission of the Kingdom Christian.
What did Jesus really mean when he said we are to be 'salt and light' in this world? And what would happen if we were to take his command seriously today?
