October is National Pedestrian Safety Month. Demodave interviews Edd Lockwood who created "CRISS WALKER - WALK STAR" to help educate the community about pedestrian safety.  CRISS WALKER says: “The numbers go on and on and up and up and we must do something about it. By working together, we can reduce pedestrian fatalities and create safer roads for everyone.” His message is simple yet crucial: “Stay Safe; Stay alert and abide by the rules of the road while driving, and pedestrians please use the proper pedestrian places to cross the roads, and all pedestrian requirements and procedures.

The 6th annual Paint Nevada Pink kicks off October 1 in Reno and features breast cancer awareness and screening events all month long. The campaign is an effort by Nevada Cancer Coalition and its many partners to unify behind a consistent message for breast cancer early detection: Nevadans age 40 and older should receive a mammogram every year to screen for breast cancer. In the past, NCC and partners have asked people to take "the pledge" to get screened or remind a loved one to do so. That's still vital. However we're also working to expand our impact by educating Nevadans about breast cancer early detection, the importance of mammograms, and how to get screened -- including how to cover the cost. For some, including those without health insurance or whose insurance doesn't cover the full cost of screening, mammograms may feel out of reach. Paint Nevada Pink hosts several events designed to connect those people with no-cost screening programs to ensure they have the same ability to protect their health as everyone else. Paint Nevada Pink's fundraising events help to cover the cost of mammograms for those who can't afford them. Other events connect community members with free programs and assist with scheduling mammogram appointments. And then there's the education. Many of these events will also have information available to learn more about risk factors for breast cancer, signs and symptoms, and what screening feels like.

Albertsons and Vons are teaming up with Three Square Food Bank this September to make an impact on food insecurity in the valley. From September 1–September 30, customers can donate directly to the food bank at any local Albertsons and Vons checkout line using the pin pad.

The grassroots work we do focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by: delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide. As a part of AFSP’s growing nationwide network of chapters, we bring together people from all backgrounds who want to prevent suicide in our communities. Families and friends who have lost someone to suicide, vulnerable individuals, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others energize our chapter.
