Our second #StudioGhibliSavingThrow took us to the more recent gem The Wind Rises. With a more serious tone The Wind Rises tells the fictional biography of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi and his career and life in Japan during some monumental events in history including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression and World War 2. We talk about all the things we loved about it, the music and sound design, the portrayal of the characters, and the tough contrast between love and passion and the harsh realities of those times in Japan. It's a powerful look into grief, loss and acceptance and skirts the line between dark and light so beautiful, allowing a younger generation access to some really complex concepts and emotions. Fear not, we tangent... crazy stories about donating blood, how weird sports are now because of Covid, fascinating insights into translations and dubbing adaptations, some unsubtle hints at next weeks topic and we roll for our next Ghibli, stick around to find out so you can watch with us and join in the conversation.
