Nerds From the Crypt

Kris Jerome joined us to discuss 1998’s Fallen. The movie was directed by Gregory Hoblit and stars Denzel Washington, John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini, and Elias Koteas.

The Nerds talk about this supernatural detective thriller film and try to figure out why this movie didn’t do better in the box office.

“After witnessing the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese, police detective John Hobbes, and his partner, Jonesy, are soon investigating another murderer whose mode of operation is eerily similar to Reese’s. In the course of the investigation, Hobbes meets theology professor Gretta Milano, who introduces him to the world of the occult and the possibility that an evil spirit is behind the killings.”

Michael Tanner joins us this week to review 1988’s They Live. John Carpenter wrote and directed this cult classic. They Live is based on Ray Nelson’s short story, “Eight O’Clock in the Morning”. It stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster.

The movie debuted #1 in North America in its first week, but it received mostly negative reviews. The film was heavily criticized for its social commentary, but later enjoyed a cult following. This seems to be a pattern with early John Carpenter films. Most notably, the movie has entered pop-culture and has influenced street art.

“Nada, a wanderer without meaning in his life, discovers a pair of sunglasses capable of showing the world the way it truly is. Nada notices that both the media and the government are comprised of subliminal messages meant to keep the population subdued. He discovers that most of the social elite are skull-faced aliens bent on world domination. With this shocking discovery, Nada fights to free humanity from the mind-controlling aliens.”

This week the Nerds discuss the 1982’s The Thing. Shea (All Crime, No Cattle) joins us this week as we talk about why The Thing is among our favorite horror movies.

John Carpenter directed the movie and it stars Kurt Russell & Keith David. It is based on 1938 Sci-fi novella, “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr.  Critics gave it mostly negative reviews at the time of its release, but more recently gained cult status.

"In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a battle against the vicious creature."

John Horsley (Spoiler Country) joined the Nerds to discuss the UK/Irish film Grabbers.  Kevin Lehane wrote the script, and Jon Wright directed it.

Grabbers premiered in 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive reviews. The film was announced as one of the “Best of the Fest” at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. At the 2014 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, it received two nominations for “Best Script” and “Best creature”. Unfortunately, it only received a limited theatrical release.

“When an island off the coast of Ireland is invaded by bloodsucking aliens, the heroes discover that getting drunk is the only way to survive.“

We welcomed Travis Webb to talk about his upcoming project Starlite. Originally this episode was recorded as a double episode, as Travis stayed on to talk about a couple of episodes of Tales From the Crypt. We have decided to re-release it as two separate episodes. Make sure to join us for episode 62, as we review another 4 episodes of Tales From the Crypt.

The creative team for Starlite consists of Brett, Greg, and Travis; three friends with shared experiences in creative media, rave culture, Burning Man, and drinking at comic conventions. Our very own Greg Smith is one of the creators of this project.

"What happens to child superheroes after they’re all grown up? Do they end up like countless Hollywood child stars: a heroic past haunting their present, forgotten by the pop-culture zeitgeist only to be recalled in nostalgic listicles on YouTube?"

You can follow the project and back it by heading over to Kickstarter. Follow Travis Webb on Twitter.

The Nerds prepare and bunker down for The Purge. We take a look at the original movie that started the franchise. The Purge is written and directed by James DeMonaco and stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. The movie’s success was enough to turn to greenlight 2 sequels and a prequel.

"In an America ravaged by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government sanctions an annual 12-hour period during which all criminal activity -- including murder -- is legal. James Sandin and his family face the ultimate test when an intruder drags the vicious outside world into their home. They struggle to survive the night while trying not to turn into monsters like the ones they are striving to avoid."

Thank you for joining us in the crypt. This time, Becky from “I Have a Strange Story” joins us to talk about 1977’s movie Rabid. It stars Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, Joe Silver, and Howard Ryshpan.

Rabid was written and directed by David Cronenberg and was filmed in Canada. Cronenberg originally wanted Sissy Spacek for the lead role but was vetoed by the studio. As a result, Marylin Chambers was cast in the lead role. Marilyn Chambers was considered, as she was looking to break into mainstream roles.

"A young woman develops a taste for human blood after experimental plastic surgery, and her victims turn into blood-thirsty zombies, leading into a city-wide epidemic."

The nerds discuss this Halloween cult classic. Its been a favorite of ours since it first came out, and it was about time we brought it into the crypt. Released in 1991, Ernest Scared Stupid is the fifth movie to feature Ernest P. Worrell.

"Ernest P. Worrell is working as a garbage collector in a small Missouri town. He accidentally unleashes the devious troll Trantor, a slimy creature confined under a tree for 200 years. Ernest then teams up with Old Lady Hackmore to get rid of the beast and bring the victims back to life."
