  • No truckers left behind

Market-based mechanisms could be the means to overcome green premiums of freight decarbonization and ensure that small enterprises don't get left behind in the transition. Ben Joldersma, CEO of Upshift.eco, joins host Tyler Cole to explore the opportunity to equip small carriers with newer, more fuel efficient technologies without breaking the bank. Carbon insets and supply chain interventions provide an opportunity for freight buyers to track their investment directly into verifiable, emissions avoidance opportunities. Upshift is focused on creating the bridge between the long tail of small carriers and large, climate-motivated freight buyers.

  • Data Driven Sustainability

Data-driven decision-making is the law of the land in freight and logistics. Shippers always know their costs, transit times, and tradeoffs. But as we enter another variable into the equation, how can freight buyers and sellers have confidence in measuring their carbon footprint? And once it’s known, how can it be managed and operationalized?Today’s guest knows the answers and is a supply chain sustainability leader. Priya Rajagopalan, Chief Product Officer at FourKites and Board Member of Brambles, joins the show to discuss the latest sustainability product announcements from FourKites. Tyler and Priya discuss the value of programs like EPA SmartWay and the benefits of enhanced carbon accounting utilizing primary data. Their conversation also touches on the importance of software solutions to serve up sustainability metrics alongside traditional KPIs to facilitate transactional decision-making for shippers.FourKites is a Chicago-based technology company providing real-time, end-to-end supply chain visibility solutions that maximize agility, efficiency and collaboration across the entire logistics industry.

  • Collaboration is Key

Battery electric vehicles are commonly viewed as the practical solution to decarbonize transportation. But despite the funding announcements and hype, it’s not as simple as heading to the dealer to swap out your old diesel. There are operational differences, supply chain delays, and charging infrastructure upgrades to consider. And that’s before looking at the price tag and understanding total cost of ownership. These challenges are all being addressed by The Electrification Coalition (EC), a nonprofit dedicated to facilitating widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Today’s episode features Alma Meckler-Pacheco, a freight electrification associate at the EC, explaining the various workstreams underway to accelerate battery electric truck adoption. These efforts include policy development, advocacy campaigns, shipper and carrier education, and building support among coalition members.

  • The Future of Freight is Rail

As decarbonization efforts gain importance, it's clear that transport emissions will be increasingly scrutinized. Shifting freight from trucks to rail, known as modal shift, is a common way to immediately reduce emissions. But are the current rail systems prepared for such potential growth? That's the question being answered today by Matt Soule, CEO of Parallel Systems. Matt leads a group of mission-driven engineers building autonomous rail vehicles (ARVs), designed to enable existing rail infrastructure to capture market share away from the truckload market. Matt joins host Tyler Cole to discuss the company's origin, how his experience as a SpaceX engineer led him to a first principles approach to freight network decarbonization and optimization, and what's next for the company.
