In recent years, the non-invasive neurostimulation treatment, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or ‘TMS’, has been gaining recognition as a viable and evidence-based medical alternative for patients suffering Depression who are not responding adequately to first line treatments, such as medication. 

The benefits of this treatment and how to best apply it, is being validated now in elderly populations. Dr. Albino Oliveira-Maia, researcher, and director at NOVA Medical School in Portugal, runs a clinical unit focused on providing innovative mental health treatments for cancer patients and patients with Depression and OCD who have not been helped by other methods.  

Here they provide TMS in combination with other treatments and explore the positive effects and outcomes in a wide-ranging patient population, including those in geriatric care. neurocare’s Dr Trevor Brown speaks with Dr Oliveira-Maia to learn more about his research and outlook for TMS and how the method can be improved and better utilized, such as the effects of ‘maintenance’ sessions and how well TMS works in elderly.

The EEG Biofeedback technique, also known as ‘Neurofeedback’ has gained widespread attention in the last few decades as a non-invasive and medication-free treatment option in ADHD. With many different techniques and equipment, one such Neurofeedback protocol which measures and trains what is called ‘Slow Coritcal Potentials’ (SCP) was born out of research in Germany. 
 

Ute Strehl has been a leading researcher in this area from the University of Tübigen. Tübigen has been home to many famous scientists since the 15th century and Ute was part of Niels Birbaumer’s team who first applied this version of Neurofeedback using ‘SCPs’. Different from other applications of Neurofeedback of Frequency Bands (e.g. SMR or Theta/Beta training), Slow Cortical Potentials Neurofeedback requires specialist technology and precision artifact control for correct application.  
 

The studies and findings around SCP Neurofeedback have been studied at length by Ute and her team over several decades and have shown some of the highest efficacy out of any other Neurofeedback study. neurocare’s Dr Trevor Brown speaks with Dr Strehl to find out more about the EEG phenomena of SCPs and her crucial research into Neurofeedback for ADHD. A new way of treating acute patients in hospital settings with the fast-acting antidepressant treatment, TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), has recently gained FDA approval in the United States.
