Neuropsych Files- ADHD And Autism

Today, we address a notable policy recommendation from the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. On April 28, 2026, the IACC, under the leadership of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., proposed the adoption of a standardized federal definition for “profound autism.” This proposal seeks to distinguish individuals with the highest support needs—those with minimal or no functional speech who require continuous adult supervision for safety—from the broader autism spectrum.

Discover the shocking truth behind a small ADHD trial where neither Pycnogenol supplements nor Ritalin beat placebo – and why experts say the design may be to blame. We break down study limitations in plain English, respond to Dr. Sean Luo’s take on inflated placebo effects, and compare it to the landmark MTA study that shows real benefits from proper stimulant treatment. Perfect for parents, adults with ADHD, and anyone curious about natural vs. prescription options for focus and attention – don’t miss these science-backed insights that could change how you manage symptoms.

Why do ADHD medications hit every kid differently? The answer is hidden in their genetic code, influencing everything from absorption rates to brain sensitivity. We examine how genetic insights can help families bypass months of trial and error to find the right dose and drug the first time.

The sharp rise in autism diagnoses—from 1 in 150 to 1 in 31—reflects a powerful mix of better awareness, broader criteria, and expanded screening that has brought real help to more families, yet the evidence shows most of the increase stems from improved detection of a spectrum that long existed rather than a sudden environmental catastrophe.
Strong genetic heritability (60-90%) anchors the biology, with early interventions delivering measurable gains in skills and functioning for many, though methodological limits like site variability and short-term data demand caution against hype or fear.
This balanced deep dive equips listeners with the nuance needed for informed decisions on screening, support, and policy in a high-stakes topic that drives massive public interest and healthcare spending.
