• Our lead story today will be the organized prison strike. We’ll share information, provide a narrative and keep you up to date on what’s happening. We’re also going to make an open invitation for a necessary public debate. We’ll explain shortly.

• On Aug 20th, 1862, in Mitchellville, SC, Major General Ormsby told a Union settlement named after him of Formerly enslaved Africans that they should have two names. A 1st and a Last. He told them to use their old masters name which quickly started a trend. And that is how African Americans came to have the last name of their old slavers.

• Also On August 20th, 1619, The first enslaved Africans were brought by the Dutch to the American colony of Jamestown. This began a slave trade that would last centuries and affect hundreds of millions of lives up until this day right here, right now.

• Finally, on August 21st, 1791, In Southampton County, Virginia, Nat Turner staged his organized rebellion. (also known as the Southampton Insurrection)

We don’t have a lead story today. All of it is equally rotten acts of slavery, human trafficking, and terrorism perpetrated by 21st-century slavers under the cover of law. The good news is Max is back and ready to go.

On and near this day in history.

• On Aug 15th, 1824, Freed American slaves formed the country of Liberia. The founding of Liberia in the early 1800s was motivated by the domestic politics of slavery and race in the United States as well as by U.S. foreign policy interests. In 1816, a group of white Americans founded the American Colonization Society (ACS) to deal with the “problem” of the growing number of free blacks in the United States by resettling them in Africa. The resulting state of Liberia would become the second (after Haiti) black republic in the world at that time.

• On August 20th, 1619, The first enslaved Africans were brought by the Dutch to the American colony of Jamestown. This began a slave trade that would last centuries and affect hundreds of millions of lives up until this day right here, right now.

This campaign grew out of the August 21 National Prison Strike Demands, specifically, point #10: The voting rights of all confined citizens serving prison sentences, pretrial detainees, and so-called “ex-felons” must be counted. Representation is demanded.

• Our Abolitionists in profile tonight is Benjamin Rush (1746-1813). The most prominent American physician of the late-18th century.

• Our Rider of the 21st-century Underground Railroad today is former Black Panther Robert Seth Hayes has been released from prison after 45 years behind bars.

Because of the 13th Amendment, all persons of every age, sex, gender, race, religion or national origin can legally become of slaves regardless of guilt or innocence.

New Abolitionists Radio is an award-winning weekly radio broadcast and podcast series started in 2012 to bring awareness to legalized slavery and human trafficking in the United States which is inadequately referred to as "mass incarceration". Tonight is our August 8th broadcast in our 7th season of production.

Tonight we have a number of articles to discuss including one from a surprising source about wrongful convictions in Oklahoma. A homeless teen victimized by Florida cops speak out on how he was set up which was admitted to by one of the police officers who was ordered to pin unsolved burglaries on Black people. Protests are being staged against the two largest private prison companies in the world, GEO Group, and Corecivic. GEO Group threatens to sue Florida activists over the protests and says activist are spreading false information about the company.

Of course, we have our regular segments which include our Abolitionists in Profile, tonight we will feature the entire underground railroad and our Rider Of the 21st Century Underground Railroad will be Chicago-native Marcel Brown.

• In our lead story, Colorado abolitionists take amendment T, streamline it and put it on the ballot as Amendment A for 2018. For those who aren’t familiar, amendment T and A are both voter initiatives to remove the slavery exception clause from the Colorado state constitution. Should they succeed it would make them only the 2nd state in the union to formally abolish slavery without a caveat.

• Slavery Abolition Act, (1833), in British history, an act of Parliament that abolished slavery in most British colonies, freeing more than 800,000 enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and South Africa as well as a small number in Canada. It received Royal Assent on August 28, 1833, and took effect on August 1, 1834.

• Our Rider of the 21st-century Underground Railroad today is Shawn Williams. A Brooklyn man who spent the last 24 years behind bars. Shawn walked free Friday after a judge tossed out the indictment that put him there.
