One of the wonderful things about living in the PNW is the access we have to so many incredible trails for hiking. If you’ve ever been out in the wilderness, you know the importance of staying on the trail and paying attention to the trail signs. And life is the same. This Sunday we begin our Lent journey to the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection at Easter by beginning a new series titled Direction in the Wilderness. Where humanity has wandered, Jesus provides direction to His life of flourishing. We are excited for all that God has for each of us individually and us as a church family as we lean into this Lenten wilderness hike.

This Sunday, we wrap up our series, Blessings in Disguise, by looking at Jesus’ last statement: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for the kingdomof heaven is theirs” (Matthew 5:10-12). While our context may be different from many others around the world and throughout history, persecution can take on various forms. How might Jesus’ teaching here help us as we live in anincreasingly post-Christian era? How can we be better prepared to remain faithful to Jesus in the face of people and a society that is antagonistic toward Christianity?

The more we explore Jesus’ teachings on the blessed life, the more we see how upside down His kingdom ways are from the ways of this world. And yet, the more we examine Jesus’ teachings, the more we realize that it is our world’s ways of living that are upside down. Promising blessing and happiness, they often leave us exhausted from striving and unsatisfied with what they’ve promised. This Sunday, we’ll explore another of Jesus’ teaching on what the blessed life is. “Blessed are the humble [meek] for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) There is often confusion about what meekness is and looks like in life.

Jesus turns things upside down again this week when He says that blessing comes to those who mourn. Many of us try to avoid any form of discomfort, including mourning.
