Being present in people's lives required inconvenience and sacrifice and stepping out of what solely benefits us in order to live for the benefit of others. Jesus counted us as more signficant that His own life.

We are to devote to prayer which is abandoning our place as the center of our world and surrendering that place to God as an act of heartfelt worship. We are not to collect our desires, wants and needs rather we are to empty our hands and surrender to God.

Paul reminds the Colossians that outsiders (those who do not know Christ yet) should never feel like outsiders.  However, it is not just our words that have an impact on those around us, but also how we live our lives. We need to try to emulate Jesus in all areas.

Paul reminds the Colossians that there is only Jesus and we can either chose to trust in ourselves or to trust in Christ. Our choice reveals what we believe about our own abilities, our true beliefs about God's grace and mercy, the natural tendency that all of us have towards self-righteousness and what we believe about God and how we think He sees us in Christ.
