Sermon by Dr. David Rountree on 8-1-2021 at New Covenant Church in Anderson, SC.
Bible Passage: Psalm 89
Outline:
God’s Old Covenant Cast Off and Rejected (v.1-37)
God’s Covenant Transition Anticipated (v.38-52)
God’s New Covenant in Christ for his People
1. God came to Israel by way of covenant (Gen.17:1-14).
2. The conditional nature of the covenant with the Jews is often repeated (Exod.19:5; Deut.28:45, 46, 62-64; 32:36; Dan.9:4-7; Ps.78:54-61).
3. Israel continues to reject Christ, the mediator of the new covenant. This is not disputed (John 1:11; Luke 19:42-44; Matt.21:43).
4. God declared his rejection/divorce of Israel for their unfaithfulness (Matt.21:43; 8:11-12; Isa.50:1; Jer. 3:8).
5. Jewish ethnicity does not establish heirs of God; only a saving relationship in Christ (Rom.8:15-17).
6. Christ’s new covenant is with his church from the nations (Eph.2:12-22).
