New Ghost Stories

It was supposed to be a joke. Something to scare her. Now it’s on the loose. And she doesn’t know when it’s watching.

Case 291 is possibly the most bizarre tale in the new ghost stories canon. The paranormal can certainly take all kinds of strange and weird forms.

“We have spoken together upon that which—which has befallen us. We had thought to go out, without telling anyone of the terror which has come into our—lives. She is with me in believing that tonight’s happenings are under a special ruling, and that it is God’s wish that we should tell to you all that we have suffered since—since—”

William Hope Hodgson may not be a name that's not as well known as some supernatural storytellers, but his weird works are very influential. His book The House on the Borderland was one of the earliest works of cosmic horror and was cited as favourite by Lovecraft. His story The Night Land has been cited as early entry into the dying earth sub-genre. Hodgson led a fascinating and varied life (he once feuded with Houdini) and The Voice in the Night draws on his early years as a sailor.

When a predator enters the home, there’s nothing a mother won’t do to protect her cubs.

Our chilling extended story concludes with an act of great bravery and an act of horrible violence. It’s astounding what people are capable of when it comes to their survival. But that survival can come at a considerable cost.

She saw him amongst the foxes. She became obsessed by him. And how she could escape her horrible life at home.

Season two of the podcast ends on an epic note, with this extended two-part supernatural story. This real account covers more years I think than any other in my archive of modern horror stories. It’s a reminder that ghosts don’t hide in obscure places, in old haunted houses, or historical ruins. They are all around us. They’re the people who slip through the cracks. People whose stories rarely get told.

She was the girl of his dreams. She went with him into the forest. Nothing was ever the same again.

If there was ever a case that proved the saying ‘Be careful what you wish for’... There’s a lot that’s scary about this bizarre and unexplained series of events. But the thing that I’ve always found most creepy and unsettling about this case, is that there are a lot of people involved. Ordinary folk, like your neighbours, your work colleagues, people you see on the streets - anyone can have a dark and terrifying secret.

She was controlling, she was abusive. And even when she was gone, he still couldn’t escape her.

If you’ve ever listened to someone who’s escaped an abusive relationship, you’ll hear them describe how the experience casts a shadow. The behaviour and threatening actions of an abusive partner can have a tangible, haunting effect that stays with a person for the rest of their life. It should be no surprise that there are supernatural accounts where that haunting effect manifests into a terrifyingly real form.

It was an accident. He didn't mean to. But the guy wants revenge. It's just a question of when.

Case 160 is not one of my more typical supernatural cases. It’s a horror story that doesn’t really have an ending. It just keeps carrying on. And that’s what makes it all the more frightening.

She couldn’t cope with things anymore. So she built a barrier. To keep the world out... and imprison herself within.

Mental health is a recurring theme in my paranormal cases. It’s an open question as to whether the supernatural sometimes occurs because a fragile state allows us to perceive what we might otherwise be unable to, or because a fragile psyche is a place where advanced delusions can take place. It’s hard to be sure. This extraordinary tale of possession may seem too extreme to be believed. The one thing I can say for sure, is that for the subject, this ghost story was very real indeed.

There is no room number 13 in the hotel. At least not during the day. At night, Herr Anderson's room seems smaller, and there is a strange wailing from next door.

It was inevitable that I’d do a classic M.R. James story for the podcast eventually. Many people think of Dickens at Christmas, but for the dedicated ghost story aficionado, Montague Rhodes James comes first. This spooky tale comes from his first collection, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary.

Just because it's Grandma's first Christmas without Grandad, it doesn't mean that she's going to be spending it alone.

It takes a very long time for me to research and prepare cases, and I’m always reluctant to rush the process. But when a Christmas ghost story came to my attention, I really felt like I had to take the opportunity to get it ready for the festive season. So this is a bit of an exclusive, this seasonal weird tale has never been published in any of my supernatural anthologies. Though I caution that this one is a bit stronger than one of those seasonal ‘pleasant terrors’.
