So far we’ve identified how the new and unknown can create the overwhelm of imposter syndrome (and how to defeat it).

And we’ve discussed how the utterly unexpected can create overwhelm and then we identified strategies to master the unexpected.

 

Today we are addressing a third area of overwhelm, and I must warn you, this one is particularly sinister.

It’s an Overwhelm that tends to creep up on you from behind.

But it doesn’t pounce, it’s far more sinister. It slowly consumes your time, your energy, and even your hope.

It’s the overwhelm of overload.

Each day, each week, there’s just a little more to do. A little more demanding your time and attention.

And it keeps coming. Unrelenting. Until it feels like you have no hope.

 

But there is hope!

There is a strategy to survive and even thrive.

We’re all finding this current crisis challenging?

Not getting enough sleep has very serious consequences.

Well good news, there is. Columbia University’s Neurology department has highlighted one simple question that determines if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation. 

 

The simple test: “Do you feel drowsy at all in your day?”

And then it got worse. Leaders quit.

It became absolutely overwhelming for me.

I was at my breaking point. Honestly, I was done. I was looking for a non-leadership job.

 

Thankfully, a veteran leader stepped in to help the organization and to help me.

Here’s the lessons I learned from that painful experience.

Has fear become your enemy.

Challenging you, taunting you, and holding you back.

How do you become a confident, courageous leader?

The truth is, we have some good reasons for fear.

A recent Stats Canada survey reveals that more than 1/3 of Canadian workers fear losing their job because of COVID-19. (I suspect the stats are similar elsewhere).

Then there’s the fear of coronavirus - fear for yourself, your loved ones, and what about the impact of the expected second wave?

And then all the other fears that come with life and leadership.

And, if you’re like me, you occasionally throw in an irrational fear or two for good measure. ;)

So what do you do? How do you beat fear at its own game?

The key is how you approach your fears.

Fear will never be your friend, but it can be your ally.
