The week before Thanksgiving, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced his choices to head four city departments: including a new police chief and a new fire chief. Art Acevedo was sworn in as the city’s new police chief and Samuel Pena was appointed as the new fire chief.

The appointments mark the first time in city history that two Hispanics are appointed to lead the Houston police and fire department at the same time. The population of the city of Houston is nearly half Hispanic.

Florian Martin had an opportunity to speak with both men in order to learn more about the appointments, and the challenges each will face.

‘We Remember Mates:’ A Pearl Harbor Survivor Looks Back

Today (Dec. 7, 2016) is Pearl Harbor Day. On this day 75 years ago, the Japanese attacked the U.S. fleet in Hawaii and launched America into World War II.

One of the men who survived the attack was Vaughn Hamberlin, who served aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee. Some 35 years later, in 1976, he revisited the site of the attack and was moved to write an account of that day and his feelings for his fallen comrades.

On this Pearl Harbor Day, his son, Cliff Hamberlin of The Woodlands, tells us about his father. And we hear some of Vaughans’ account of that day from an article he wrote shortly after revisiting the site. It was published in the Beaumont Enterprise.

Vaughn Hamberlin died in 1994 in Beaumont.
